Greetings from Calgary!
Well we had a great time travelling through Ontario, its really quite surprising how big it is - it's strange to think that in all the time we spent driving from South Central Ontario into the next province we could have drivin' through the continental U.S.. Most of our drive through Northern Ontario was right along the waters of Lake Superior (and hundreds of other small lakes) and we were pleasantly surprised by the rugged and hilly landscape. On the drive from Sault St. Marie we were fortunate enough to see the sunrise over the hills surrounding Lake Superior. We spent a couple of days in Thunder Bay, it was a bit chilly but we enjoyed ourselves. After walking along the waterfront to catch a view of The Sleeping Giant and the same bulk carrier ships we saw in Panama (pretty cool to see it from one end of the continent to the next) we settled in for the night at the Sleeping Giant Guesthouse. We had some drinks and met people from all over, including Anna a traveller from New Zealand. Our second day in Thunder Bay we went for a hike through Sleeping Giant Provincial
Park and saw more wildlife than we'd ever seen in any Provincial Park, even on the trails!! When we stopped for a lunch break in the parking lot we were joined by a young buck who seemed just as interested in us as we were in him and he even allowed Cass to get within 10 or so feet of him and get some great pictures. We ended our day at a surprise birthday party on the local Indian Reserve that we were invited to by the Guesthouse owner, Gail. We had lots of fun and had a very tasty meal with a large variety of food that everyone brought for a potluck feast!
We spent the last couple of days driving through the prairies, spending the night in Winnipeg and Regina, before arriving in Calgary. It was amazing to see how quickly the landscape changed. The vast openness of the prairies was both refreshing and fascinating. We were impressed by how much there was to see along the way. During our stay in Winnipeg we walked along the shores of "The Forks," an important river junction that was key to the transportation of goods in the 1800s. In
Regina we checked out the Saskatchewan Mueseum which had lots of interesting exhibits about fossils and dinosaurs, nature and landscape, and aboriginals; and best of all, it was free! We arrived in Calgary last night; navigating the city turned out to be an adventure of it's own. We ended up finding our friend's house based on beer and pizza stores. Today we went to the Canadian Olympic Park and to our surprise their was an international skeleton and bobsleigh competition going on! It was amazing to see it in person - if you can believe it, it's actually even faster than it looks on t.v. - we could hardly manage to take a picture. Climbing to the top of a ski jump hill (in the foothills of the Rockies!) we were then able to take an elevator to the very top of the ski jump ramp 90 meters above the hill. We couldn't decide who was crazier - the jumpers or the sliders. Either way, it was quite a view from the top with the Rockies stretching as far as you could see on the horizon. Tomorrow we begin our trip through the mountains, starting in Banff. We can't wait!
