On the Ball...Again
See: Humidity, 2.26.08 Tech day two…
Today was very early again. I slept hard, and my alarm left me wondering what the strange sound was- this could be bad. We had a bit longer for breakfast today, then hit the theater. The TD and his staff were already there working- way on top of things! Once the rest of the chaps and kids arrived, Ruth, Sarah and David entertained us with some pretty sweet singing and dancing onstage. The morning was filled with staging and costume rehearsals and things, so I took pictures and played with children and programmed a bit when I could. Sarah and I went to a fun kitchen store after my 2 minute nap (it’s amazing what that can do!) Then, I said two notably funny things (which, if you know me, I am seemingly not funny in real life, but I am HILARIOUS on the road!) Here is one:
Yesterday, Jenn was quite stressed, so I radioed her and said, “You’re the best wardrobe person JoHiC has ever seen. I mean that from the bottom of my butt, which is bigger than my heart.” Then today, I said something about my butt “because it’s bigger.” Sarah: than

Ruth and Sarah rocking out to some Queen to entertain us at Way-Too-Early A.M. what? Jami: everything. It was pretty funny.
After lunch, we did a full run-through of the show, mostly without stopping (which is a pretty good sign.) I had a few cues missing and some I fixed as we went, but overall it looked good. On our set, we have a projector that projects on a cyc all the way upstage. It looks okay, but we have our 5 choir mics hanging midstage, so you can see the shadow of the middle one. Yesterday and today they were talking about removing the mic altogether or trying to find an alternative. Honestly, I didn’t really care and it had nothing to do with me. Today though, while I was programming before the kids arrived, I had an idea. (write this down; it doesn’t happen often.) “I bet we could bridle that. Find some fishing line.” So Kyle and I brought in the pipe, did the math to see how much fishing line we’d need and how far off center it needed to be, and we got to work. It appears all those hours of art hangs full of bridles and fishing line and moving things tons of times really did pay

I gotta admit, I lit those! I wish the pictures looked more like they do in real life. off in real life! I tied myself a nice little clove hitch and bridled that mic and got going. No one noticed for a while, then the director did and told Kyle he was an artist for getting it to work. Once Kyle told him I did it, he said Jessica still might take it down. Oh well. It looks a bit odd because one cable slants, but it’s much better than the big shadow in the middle. That was the big story in my day (thanks Dale, Paul and Dave!)
I think we’re about ready to do a show, which is good, because we have 2 tomorrow! We will find out. I’m still struggling quite a bit with names of kids; it’s much harder because they’re all the same size and Base Choir wasn’t. So far, I can always remember Joseph, Claudio, Mirembe, Alice, Joshua B., Lubega, Mugambwa, Florence, Fiona, Patience, Godfrey Susan, Diana. I get Rose and Immaculate and Rebecca confused a lot. And Tony and Edgar and, well everyone. But I’m trying.
Things I don’t understand about hotels:
*Who decides there should only be 2 outlets in each room, and to put them in RANDOM
places, or they’re switched.
*Why they decide to put light switches in the weirdest places.
*Three cheers for 2 sinks and Bath and Body Works bath products. Coconut Lime Verbena anyone?
*Why they have the little shelves in the showers but they’re either too slanted and slippery to hold things, or just too small.
TECHNICALLY SPEAKING:
Our tech is not a proper tech, as we explained to Jenn today. It is really just a bunch of rehearsals for staging and spacing and things with tech included. It’s certainly not ideal, but it is what we have and we’re making due. Our only dress rehearsal is actually tomorrow morning, played to a full house. Yikes! Then we have a few hours to fix things when the kids are napping, and our opening night!
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY:
That I know more than I thought I did- both about lighting and about rigging/engineering; and that I miss those challenges.
THINGS TO PRAY FOR:
Our first shows tomorrow! Patience, grace, competence, communication.
