The Sofa folds out to be my bed. Yes…I have arrived. Only 4 nights in Deutschland and I think I know which way is up. The first few days where a little rough as I adjusted to the time zone, a new city, a new country and a new office. And, yes, I have been a little lonely but I’m starting to feel comfortable.
Since I did not go in to the office on my first day I spent the day wandering Heidelberg experimenting with how many times I could get lost and still find my way home. I have a few key landmarks and as long as I can find those I know how to get back to my place.
Speaking of my place, I’ve attached some pictures. Its small (bachelor apt) but it’s cozy. I have my stuff strewn everywhere so it’s starting to feel like home. The sofa pulls out to be my bed and is remarkably comfortable. I finally have a phone and soon I’ll have an internet connection. The kitchen is well equipped and I have made a few meals for myself. As you can see on the left of the kitchen picture, I’ve brought a can of Tim Horton’s coffee (thanks,

Just like home...stuff strewn all over the table. Mary!) so I can enjoy a taste of home whenever I like.
My first big adventure was taking the city bus to work Thursday morning. I was lucky enough to get a lift with a colleague (Matthias) the first 2 mornings but decided it was time to stand on my own two feet like a big girl and make my own way to the office. With the help of Les and Matthias I found out I had to take bus 41 (no connections, thank goodness), where the closest stop to my place is and the fare. At the bigger stops (Bismarckplatz or the train station) you can buy a ticket for your fare at a machine so I opted for that instead of my local stop where I actually would have had to speak to the driver. Turns out I bought the wrong ticket fare (2E vs. the 3.20E it should be) but it seems to be on the honor system so not likely anyone would notice I traveled more zones than my fare would allow. What I didn’t know is that when you buy one of these tickets you are supposed to have them stamped by a little

Notice the ever important can of Tim Horton's Coffee. orange machine just inside the all of the bus doors. When I got on the bus I never had it stamped by the little orange self-serve stamping machine.
Yup, I skipped payment and took a free ride on the HSB! I'm not sure what the repercussions of scamming a free ride would be (even if it was by accident) but I’m thankful I didn’t have the embarrassing experience of getting caught. I wonder if I got arrested because of my ignorance if Adobe would bail me out….
Anyway, today I bought the correct fare and had the ticket stamped. No more free rides for me.
