Yosemite & Sequoia

Wow was Wednesday a long day. We woke up in Merced, ate another hotel breakfast and the Hertz guy picked us up. We were right by the road into Yosemite and we were off by 8:30. The road into Yosemite wasn't too bad, we climbed to what height? 7,000 feet. Brian's new favorite height. The park is really pretty. We were more or less auto touring, but did stop and walk into look at Yosemite Falls. There were lots of folks there, most from Europe. The road out of Yosemite was a little windier, but pretty, again with the views of the Sierras.

I had a route mapped out to Sequoia National Park. We came back into California farm land, and I promptly got us lost. We finally got on track near Fresno and were off to Sequoia. The road in was windy and once again we climbed to what? 7,000 feet. I was kinda getting over the high and no shoulders or guardrails between me and 1,000s of feet of beautiful views. We walked into the General Sherman tree. It is very wide and the largest by volume tree in the world. The top of it is dead, and redwoods are taller, but this is the biggest biomass.

I think Brian counted more than 30 hairpin turns to get down out of the park. It was slow going. There were signs to down shift to 1st gear so you didn't wear out your breaks, which we did. I was tired since I'd been up since 3, and even though the scenery was great, I was glad when we were down around 1,000 feet again. We were what we had hoped to keep for a time table, so we decided to drive for awhile. We figured if we could get south of Bakersfield we could avoid morning traffic there. We made it to Tehachapi. It was a farily good sized town in the middle of nowhere. I was just gald to see any town at this point. There had been absolutely nothing for a solid hour or more south of Bakersfield. Something about driving through a dark desert in the middle of the night..... We stayed at a Best Western that was the best room we've had yet, and the one we stayed at the least amount of time. We landed there well after 10.

Yesterday we drove out of California and into Arizona to the Grand Canyon. Today we're headed across New Mexico and most of Texas to see my uncle and cousins in Wichita Falls, Texas. It's about 10 or 11 hours of driving. I'll try to type something up along the way and post my canyon pictures. Wow. That was a sight.
