Hello All,
We are still rockin it in Whitianga. (pronounce Fitianha) We have spent four days working at the Wilderland Trust farm. I eill give you a day by day breakday in a moment. First let me give you an idea of what this place is like. Well I can't really give you a perfect description but for any of you who lived at EBF and or visited the freedom farm it is kind of like a mix between the two. This is a communal property (very large property with many gardens orchards and bee boxes), each resident ( I believe there are about 15) has there own p[rivate residence. We also have our own private residence and there is a common building with a kitchen, shower and laundry machine. The common building is known as the "Hall".
The living is rustic and dirt is fully embraced as a way of life. There is a young resident named Tim who interacts moist with the WWOOFers. He is 19 angry and Vegan. Need I say more.
We work Mon. - Sat. from 9am to 1pm and then we all share a communal lunch. We take care of ourserlves for breakfast and dinner. We are welcome to eat any food we find and we can bring food in from outside. There is a preference that we not cook meat in the "Hall".
That's the best I can do until we have some pictures on a CD and then we will add them to the blog.
SO now for our daily jobs and fun.
Thursday Dec. 1st:
Abby bagged tea and Benji built frames for the bee boxes.
After work we went to a beach in a nearby town called Whangapoa. WE went to a main beach then hiked on a trail along the coast to another beach. Just a few kids came along and we had this gorgeous white sand beach to ourselves. We had a swim and played in the sand.
Friday Dec. 2nd:
Abby bagged tea and Benji built frames for the bee boxes.
After work we went to town for meat. Yes that is right we need to fulfill our carnivorous urges so went to town and had cheeseburgers and chips. YUMMMMMMMMMM!!!
Saturday Dec. 3rd:
Abby cleared scrub from the base of some Macadamia trees and Benji weeded some potatos, watered some new tamarillo trees and picked tangelos.
WE were quite tired and we didn't make it off the farm. WE spoke with Mom and Dad Rappoport, everything is well on the East Coast, we miss them and they miss us.
Sunday Dec. 4th:
Day off, we slept in. We tried to make pancakes without a recipe, not the most successful cooking experience we have had. After much delay we finally went to Cathedral cove beach. It was a nice 40 min walk from the parking area to another beautiful beach very unique as the beach is seprerated into two parts by a sandstone cliff. THer is a large vaulted cave through the cliff that takes you from one section of beach to the next. We found some neat tide pools and saw crabs, snails and two little sea stars. The wheather was off and on clouds so we did not swim. We have not yet snorkeled so the underwater life is still a mystery to us.
Monday Dec. 5th:
Abby stripped the leaves off many twigs of pineapple sage and Benji cut down unwanted bamboo shoots then planted beets and lettuce. It was rainy off and on so Benji got nice and muddy. Now we are in town doing e-mail, buying some craft supplies and just enjoying being independant.
One last thing about Wilderland the honey is great and there are three adorable children as well as some other children who aren't so adorable. You can be sure taht we will have tales of the adorable children in our next posting.
That is all for now. We love you all and we find that in NZ as in the US we enjoy communal living though it is unlikely we will choose it as our permanent life situation.
