Granada Spain...The Alhambra

Granada...This ancient city was founded by the Iberians and for 250 years was a Moorish Kingdom. When Granada fell to the Catholic Monarchs some outstanding Moorish architecture was left behind. The greatest legacy of their rule is the spectacular palace complex ...The Alhambra.
The magical use of space, light, water, gardens, and decoration make this a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alhambra is nestled in a mountainside with the city of Granada on one side and the snow capped Sierra Nevada Mountains as a backdrop---quite a lovely setting.
As we began organizing this excursion, we heard horror stories about how difficult it is to obtain tickets. The Alhambra is a VERY popular tourist destination, and only "so many" folks are permitted in each day. Thanks to our campground gal, we are all set with our vouchers.
We divided our visit into three main parts: 1) The Alcazaba, the military area, 2) the Palace Nazaries, where official business and entertainment were conducted, and 3) the country home of the sultan and his family, the Generalife, where the family enjoyed gardens and privacy.
Simple materials were used...plaster, timber, and tiles...but they were superbly worked. This is a highlight of the Andalusia region of Spain. The day required a great deal of walking, but it was a delightfully cool day and the scenery wonderful.
Back "home" we are planning for our trip to Barcelona tomorrow. Life on the road requires work and organization.

Wow!
This is certainly worthy of being a World Heritage site. Thanks for all of the beautiful pictures. It's almost like being there. (Well, not quite).
