Strange experince of time travel We experienced a strange travelling thing, read carefully: we left Sydney at 6pm to fly to Hawaii. It was about an 8 hour flight, and we arrived 7am on the same day. So we lived Thursday the 3rd April twice - now that was weird! Our hotel room was comfy with great view across the town of Waikiki, and had a microwave and fridge, so we could eat more healthily and cheaply!
What's it was like... The beaches here were busy and full of surfers sitting on their boards in the water waiting for the perfect wave to ride. Waikiki Beach was lovely with palm trees, sunbathers and the surfers. Everything was clean and organised. The roads near to the beach were lined in shops, with ample surfy type shops, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl etc. Even though temptation was high, I was unsure of the climate in South America, and having a backpack prevented me buying some of these gorgeous bargains.
Pearl Harbor One of the places we visited was Pearl Harbour Museum / Memorial. I learnt so much about Dec 7th 1941. We watched a 20min film, which was very
good, and had a trip over to a sunken vessel, which lays as a memorial to those who lost their lives on this day, killed by the Japanese.
Enjoyed the Baseball Now being in America, we noticed Baseball being a big sport. From our hotel room, we spotted a match in progress, so we took our rug (my sarong) and sat and watched the match. It was really exciting, we could hear people around us getting annoyed by the mistakes they were making. Hearing the American accent was amusing enough for me! I couldn’t get out of my mind that it was like rounders being played on a bigger pitch, with men in lovely uniforms. I still enjoyed it very much.
Volcano climbing Our active day was climbing the Diamond Head crater. This volcano last erupted 300,000 years ago. The weather was lovely and the climb was very satisfying. Many people young to old, fit to fat were having a go at the climb. A clear path led the way with no chances of getting lost. It was an interesting ascent, through rocky paths, a tunnel and steps to the top. Reaching the top
greeted us with a magnificent view of Waikiki Beach and surrounding areas. Descending was easy!
We enjoyed staying in Hawaii, but it didn’t really have the island feel that we expected. It’s a piece of America on a big island. Next stop was L.A.
