Our campsite was on the shores of Lake Malawi, a lake so big it looks like the sea. We were met in the morning by Donald Duck (it would seem that everyone in Malawi has a nickname, there was also Kingfisher, Sugar'n'Spice, Giraffe & Superman) who took us to the village to see a typical Malawian house made from local fired clay & then onto one of the water pumps providing fresh water free from Bilharzia. From there we went to the local hospital & met the doctors assistant. The hospital does not have a resident doctor & is very short of drugs, often malaria patients are just given painkillers & told to come back in a few days but they seldom have the means to properly treat them. As it was a Saturday the local children were not at school but that didn't stop 30 or so kids following us to the school & giving us their own personal tour.
In the evening we went to Donald Ducks house for a Malawian meal of rice, beans & cassava & met the Ducklings. Earlier in the day there had been two funerals in the village so the local kids weren't allowed to sing & dance as they usually do, so after supper we meandered back to the campsite in moonlight.
