This past monday night, as in yesterday, I went with 15 other people in my program to this thing called Cook and Taste. It is basically where you learn how to cook some of the most popular Spanish dishes, and then you get to eat it all!!! We walked about 15 minutes from our school down Las Ramblas and to this little flat that is only this huge kitchen. This lady is a professional cook and she has a business where people can come and learn how to cook basically whatever they want. She says it is very popular with study abroad groups like ours as well as tourists and other people who just want to learn how to cook something new and Spanish. We made 5 different things. For an appetizer we made this cold tomato soupy thing, it wasnt liquid, but it wasnt solid, right in the middle, kinda hard to explain...but it had nuts and cheese on top too! Then we made pan con tomate (translation- bread with tomato) which is VERY popular here...people eat it with almost every meal, and you also put garlic and olive oil on it and toast it...its to die for!!! Next part was called tortilla espanola...it is like a big omelet with potatoes and onions inside...its sooooo good! The main dish was paella, the most popular Spanish dish, which consists of rice cooked in this amazing mix of sauces and different kinds of seafood such as squid and scallops and such. Then for dessert, which I made with my friend Carli, we had crema catalana, which is very similar to creme brulee. It is a mixture of eggs, sugar, starch, cinnamon, lemon, milk, and so forth, and you blow torch sugar on the top to give it a nice crispy outside. Check out the pictures and you will get a better idea of what everything looks like. If you come to Spain, all these foods are a must! The whole process of cooking and eating took about 3 hours. Everyone left very satisfied and full at the end of it all!
