*sorry this short blog encompasses three countries!! argentina, chile, and ecuador!!!!**
Can anyone say CHOCOLATE!?!? I was so excited to see this town of Bariloche that I had heard so much about....and all that I heard was so true! German architechture, the brilliant food (meat) of argentina, and CHOCOLATE! I´m not even a bit sweets eater, and eat less chocolate....I´d usually take a bag of chips over a candy bar any day! BUT, when you walk past store after store with displays of chocolate elephants, chocolate monkeys, chocolate fountains, the smells, the colors (sure, theres white and brown chocolate, but the array of wrappings and lights and toys full of chocolate!!!) its sooo mesmorizing! All I did was eat chocolates! I met some really great girls at the hostel I was staying at...one from Switzerland who said that Bariloche really reminded her of home and gave me some good safety tips for the rest of my trip. Another, Emi, from Tokyo, who was absolutely the first traveler I´ve met on this trip that made me green with envy!
Listen to this: she´s a sports journalist at home (photo and writer) and talked her boss into giving her a one
year leave for a trip around the world! She bought a one way ticket to Turkey, and has been traveling, mostly by bus and train, wherever her heart takes her! She went throughout Europe, over to London, then over to ICELAND (pretty high on my list!) then came back to england, and went to morroco, over to egpyt, then up through isreal and jordan! She said they were amazing, and she felt very safe, even as a solo woman. We had many discussions about the images portrayed by our respective governments that encourage or discourage travel to certain areas. She wasnt planning on visiting the Middle East, but met other travelers that raved about it, she decided to go, and said it was unbelievable! Then she came back to Africa an spent about 6 months going down the eastern coast of Africa visiting village, national parks, safaris, you name it, she saw it! Then flew from South Africa over to SA where she is finishing her trip. From Bariloche she goes back to santiago, then out to easter island!!!! GEEZ! All the places on my list that I didn''t get to on this adventure! Shes hoping to catch a quick
trip to alaska before she heads home (ZB....I told her we would hook her up in Kodiak!) Wow. I´m MORE than ISPIRED for my next trip around the world!
Anyways, only spent a day in Bariloche, then took a bus back over to Chile. I met up with Emi again in Puerto Montt and we had many beers and dinner before my flight back up to Santiago! I had a fabulous 24 hours in Santiago....really really LOVE That city! I cannot wait to go back at the end of my trip and explore a little mroe! Many parks, bustling streets, great architecture, and a fantastic energy of musicians and artists! I´m now in Quito for 2 days, and tomorrow is my volunteer orientation! Then off to the reserve! I am really looking forward to working again, meeting some great people, and helping out the community of this awesome country! In the 2 short days I´ve been in Ecuador, I´m enamored by the colors of the buildings, the green of the mountains right here in the city, the colors of the clothing, and the sheer talent of the artists (in paintings, jewelry, and clothing for sale on the streets!)
I hope to have internet access from the reserves, and will update you on my projects up there! I have about 3 weeks in the Andes, then another 3 weeks on the coast! Click on this link: http://www.volunteer.org.nz/ecuador/ and check out the La hesperia and Costal Congal programs. That is where I will be working!
Hope everyone is staying warm during the snowiest winter wisconsin has ever seen! geez! love you all! 😊S
