Looking Back
Panoramic views of downtown NY from the Brooklyn Bridge Even though we're not really huge fans of the bustling city life, we could not resist the temptation to visit New York. Allie put us on to cheap Greyhound bus "e-"tickets, perhaps the only cheap thing we had fir the week excluding our outstanding $5 Pizza and soda combo deal which sustained us along side an unhealthy dose of coffee and muffins!
We started our stay by checking into the hotel Alex stayed in before, right in the middle of Manhattan, opposite Madison Square Gardens, only a stones throw from the Empire State building and Times Square. We got to take in the spectacular evening views from the top of the Empire State just as the sun began to set in the distance dropping over New Jersey. We waited inside out of the wind until dark, and took another quick stroll along the viewing tower snapping a vast number of photos of the city as it lit up more and more as each second passed.
We soon got used to the Metro, travelling up and down-town taking in the main attractions of the city and succumbing to a few bargains in the shops along the way even managing to find
a closing down sale and "saving a fortune" on a a few (non-)essentials!
One of the most impressive Museums was one neither of us had visited before, just off central park, The Natural History. We spent literally hours indulging in 3D space shows in the planetarium, learning of future cosmic collisions between galaxies and over saturating ourselves in the halls filled with priceless colourful gems and minerals.
Sadly, The Guggenheim was still covered in scaffolding and the interior was 80% closed due to refurbishment and changing of exhibits...
...downtown, the Brooklyn Bridge was as spectacular as ever, the wind dropped as we walked out to the first set of arches and we gazed back into the sunshine as the sky scrapers glimmering in the distance.
Our action-packed four days were quite an experience, with numerous trips back and forth to get in all the attractions on our city pass, missing only the circle line ferry cruise due to it's "off season" timetable not fitting into our time in town. That and still having not seen the outside marvel of the Guggenheim were frustrating, yet it will always be good to have an excuse to go back
to New York!
