At Central MercardoAt Central MercardoAt Central Mercardo

There´s something fishy about this market.
15.10.05 (yesterday) We went for a walk around the city. We went to the Central Mercardo which is a traditional chilean market selling food, mainly sea food which is sent to UK too.

Today we went to Cerra Santa Lucia, this is a historic part of the city. It boasts gardens, fountains and a castle. We had been told not to go early in the morning, in the afternoon or at night as it can be dangerous. So we got there at about 11am, nice and safe!

It was very pretty. At the top of the hill (as it´s on a hill) you get a nice view of the city with the Andes in the background. The mountains aren´t really clear as there is always a smog over the city, nice!
Over the road we went to a craft market that was partially open. I got a nice glass necklace and other nik naks.

We then went on the search to find San Christobal, this is a big hill which overlooks the city with a statue of the virgin Mary. We could see it, we just had to get there! So we set off down some very quiet streets (everywhere was dead on Sunday). Andy navigated us well and we came to a big, busy tourist destination. It was it! We got on a dodgy tram/cart thing (1.200pesos) to take us up the hill (the pope visited here in 1997/98). The tram was so so so scary! It was a big steep hill. Got to the top and kept climbing the steps. At the top is an outside church, with an alter and benches in rows between flowers and gardens.
At the very top was the virgin mary statue and amazing views. You could see across the city for miles and the mountains with snow on top. The views could almost rival those of Christ the Redeemer in Rio!
We walked about, had an ice cream. Melissa lit a candle for her mum at the top of the hill, which is cool. So now there is one in Rio and Chile!

Looks lovely, youre both going to come back well fit with all this walking and climbing - however the amount of beer youre both consuming will make up for those extra pounds lost!!
