Finally I managed to leave Vilcabamba. From there I took the bus to Loja where I went to the hairdresser Daniela had recommended me (and I really needed it). I also looked around the city for a while, but it did not impress me too much. Too many people, too much pollution. Although it does have a number of pretty colonial buildings.
The next town was Zamora which is another entry point to Podocarpus National Park. Zamora claims to have the largest clock in the world, built in the grass on a hill. I stayed in the Cabanas Tzanka, a funny zoo-like place. They take care of hurt and tortured animals, and try to let them out into the wilderness again. A number of them they keep though. There was an enormous tapir, running around freely in the garden, three procupines, a number of monkeys, parrots, some 20 tortoises, a kaiman and loads of other animals of whom I can't remember the names.
I also went for a long walk in the national park, along a river. I saw a black mammal, about 70 cm long, but I don't know what it was and was too slow to take
a picture.

Loja
Sonja, from your photos of Loja, the town looks very clean. I even can see the Christmas decoration on the street! You makes lovely pictures of the town, but you don't have strong feeling to this town. I found it lovely!
