Sėdu į autobusą... read more

Nachdem man uns in einen Bus verfrachtet ha... read more

Leaving Cuenca, we headed south for about five hours to Loja, an overnight stop on the way to the Peruvian border. The next day bus ride would be ten hours, so we hit the sack earlier and caught an early 7 AM bus for Piura, in Peru. All was well until an hour out of Loja when our bus broke down. We made it up a steep grade but finally conked out at a non descript town where both drivers went to work repairing the vehicle. After several yanks, cranks, and prayers, the engine would not cooperate so the driver declared our trip a bust and to find other means. What a bummer. We learned the next bus to Piura would be leaving at 1 PM, putting us into Piura at an ungodly late hour. But ... read more

It´s been one of those tough traveling days... always got to throw one or two into the mix. My morning in Cuenca started with a nice breakfast but the day turned when I stepped into minivan heading to Loja. My hotel reserved me a spot with the Elite touring company...well the three and half drive was really intense. The roads were curvy and the driver took every turn with very high speeds. Inside the car was too warm and the woman in front of me hardly cracked her window. I was sitting next to an american who smelled of smoke and body oder (I know we have all been in the not so fresh state...) For the last half hour I was hopping that I would not vomit from car sickness...I didn´t thank goodness. So far ... read more

Sarah: “They say they have an intact culture, but they have volleyball, toothpaste, plumbing and I saw a guy with an Abercrombie and Fitch pullover.” Zoe: “Yeah, the guide has a Lacoste T-shirt!” Tony: “No culture is completely untouched.” Sarah: “…oh yeah, I know; it was alright though.” Indigenous people who fail to live up to the tourists’ expectations of authenticity run the risk of being labeled illegitimate and faux. The construct that equates indigenous authenticity with lack of Western goods lives on in contemporary public attitudes and was emphasized in this conversation between three tourists, as we drove back from a tour having just visited the local museum. Here we see Sarah insinuating dishonesty, by highlighting obvious cultural in-authenticities. She implies the Saraguro are fakes; their culture cannot be “intact” despite what “they say”, since ... read more

The idea that civilization, or its Trojan horse, globalization, corrupts and ultimately destroys indigenous culture and all its inherent goodness was a common belief amongst the tourists visiting Saraguro. As one tourist put it, the indigenous people of Saraguro face “a struggle to maintain their culture, values and traditions and not be bulldozed or washed away by outside forces.” Another tourist worried about “…them being able to engage in the broader world that has been dropped down upon them Phrases such as “bulldozed,” “washed away” or having the world “dropped down upon them” imply a sense of destruction or imminent doom, and highlight the perception that the indigenous Saraguros live in a precarious state at risk from “outside forces” or the “broader world”, which hang over them like the Sword of Damocles. Their isolation from the ... read more

So, there I was, sitting in a pick-up truck on a cevlar-vest with the stock of a rifle tucked away behind my heals. I couldn't see what kind of rifle since the luggage of the tree men escorting me was covering the rest. But I guess it doesn't really matter what kind of rifle it was and I should tell the story as it happened... But before I do so I would like to let everyone know that it turned out for the best and that I am allllright ...prepare for some shockers though ;D So after my two days in Quito, during which I explored the historical centre, mirador and whatnot together with a nice Swiss girl I decided to move on towards the next stop, Baños. Baños is a nice little town, tucked away ... read more

We have left the Southern Oriente after 9 days in the jungle, we are now in the Southern Highlands at Loja. We love it here. The town is the largest in this region, 150,000, and very clean and relaxed. The temperature dropped down to the low 70's and the humidity down to about 60% as compared to mid 80's & 95% in the jungle. The town is known for it's tamales and humitas as well as it's coffee. What's not to like. After a steady diet of seco de pollo con arroz y papas in the jungle, tamales and fresh brewed coffee for breakfast and tamales and burritos for dinner is a dream come true. During our time in the Oriente we visited four towns. Puyo, Macas, and Gualaquiza for two days each, and Zamora, for ... read more

We just had a look through our pictures to pull out any we had of children to be used for a conference Jennifer is helping to organize in Canada, in May. So since they are all sorted and sitting in a single file I thought it would be no trouble at all to throw them up here (now possible in a single click!) and share them with the world. I won´t be putting captions to any of them, but in many instances the places are included in the image title. Otherwise you can have a bit of fun guessing,-) Enjoy! In other news, we are just coming to the end of a six month stint in Saraguro, Ecuador. Jennifer was studying child rearing practices and lo and behold I was studying tourists, their motivations, and their ... read more
