So, here i am, finally made it on the truck in Camp Karen, Nairobi. For a while this wasn't too sure, after a horribly long flight, and a seat neighbour who was coughing as on his deathbed, i landed in Nairobi airport just to realise half of my luggage had gone. Who knows me can sense the desaster - i am not good with that kind of nonsense when i am already stressed out. After fruitless negotiations with the airport personnel i headed for Camp Karen, with a bag full of knickers and TShirts, WITHOUT a bag full of malaria medication, suncreme, cosmetics, sleeping bag, towels etc. Poor Robin at home had to listen to my moaning/ panic attacks for nearly three days, at points i was even asking him if i could come home, i was soooo frustrated! Anyway, i stayed, and Camp Karen, Nairobi, could actually have been nice, if not all my stuff had gone! I had also caught a bug from above mentioned seat neighbour that even gave me a bit of a fever, and i burned myself totally on the first day in Kenia without any suncreme, although it was cloudy and i had been sitting under a tree.
ANYWAY, after all of that hazzle, more fruitless phone calls to the airport and the airline, I got the bag on Sunday night, 10 o'clock. Our truck left at 8 o'clock the next morning, our tour guide Alex had made breakfast and introduced us to the truck. Actually, the truck is quite comfy. The seats are comfy, there is a safe and underneath every bench there is storage space for the backpacks. Our group of 12 is fine, i get along with everybody, but i'm afraid there's nobody i really clicked with, especially cause they are all a lot younger/ older than me and i am the only single traveller on this truck! Who would have thought! Well, the group is going to change after three weeks, when we come back to Nairobi, and i am curious who will join, and who will leave.
We left Nairobi for Nakuru, which is i believe in roughly north-westerly direction. The countryside wasn't particularly impressive until we actually entered the rift valley, a HUGE green valley in between impressive mountains (well, hills). We had to actually cross these mountain ranges, which offered spectacular views down into the green landscape, which is dominated by acacias, cactus and other 'thorny' plants. For the first two days we were basically driving. We are in a bit of a rush to get to Rwanda, as Visas for the mountain gorillas have been given out for a particular day, and will see more of the beautiful country on our way back. The campsites we stayed at were all exceptionally nice and well equiped, but i have to say, the two nights in kenia were freezing cold! My skinny sleeping bag has proven no good what so ever here. Although it gets quite warm during the day, the nights are cool as Kenia and also Uganda are on altitude, Uganda on average 1000 metres altitude!
We crossed the boarder into Uganda today, and you will hear more from me soon. Love to all at home, and Rob xxx
