Ciao tutti!
I have some fabulous updates about last weekend, which was spent in Rimini. Rimini is a town on the eastern coast of Italy, in the region Emilia Romagna (known for its cheese and its capital, Bologna). Rimini is a beach town on the Adriatic Sea, so it was kind of cool to be able to say that I swam in both the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea within a week. Rimini is supposedly a really happening town for nightlife and clubbing, but even though it was 80 degrees and sunny it was still off-season and therefore most of the clubs and a lot of the hotels were closed. But that’s okay, because we made our own fun!
We didn’t make plans to go to Rimini until Friday afternoon, so instead of rushing out that afternoon we booked a 6:05 AM train for Saturday morning. So that night we had a dinner party for all 7 of us going, which was amazing, and then they all somehow slept on the floor and couches of my living room so we could all leave for Stazione Centrale really early, because it is right near my apartment. So after after
going to bed at 1 AM and waking up at 4:45 AM, we headed over to the train station. But we got to sleep on the train, which was nice.
We got into Rimini after a 3 hr train ride and went to the tourism office, where they showed us how to walk to our hostel. We walked into the hostel and found plaster and half-finished walls everywhere, and a fat Italian construction worker came out and told us that we didn’t have reservations there, we had reservations at the OTHER hostel in Rimini with the same name because that one was being renovated. He showed us a map of Rimini and pointed to our new hostel… which was off the map. When we were obviously upset, he offered to drive us there in the hostel van. Soo, there we are, all piled into a Sunflower Beach Backpacker Hostel van with Italian guys we don’t know to be driven God-knows-where. We were a little worried, but there really was nothing else we could do. I got stuck in the front seat, sandwiched between the two Italian guys, the fattest of whom promptly put his arm around me. WHY OH
WHY do am I always the one who gets in these situations?!
Finally they dropped us off at the new hostel. We had decided at the last minute to bring one extra person, so we figured he could just sleep on the floor like people do all the time in hostels. So we checked in with six people, and TJ just came upstairs with us afterwards. Later that day when we came back to get our passports, the guy at the desk proceeded to yell at us about there being seven of us and threatened to call the police, and we tried anxiously to explain that we weren’t trying to cheat him or anything we just didn’t have time/didn’t know we needed to book another room. So he made TJ pay for another bed, which was fine, but then he made us apologize and said “you wouldn’t do this in your own country.” How rude! We absolutely would! Hahah.
That afternoon we went to the beach all day, which was 80 and sunny. For the first time I’ve seen in Europe, the beach was actually sandy (silky, velvety sand) instead of rocky. We came back and tried to
shower in the teeny tiny hostel bathrooms, and then went down to the hostel bar for happy hour. Then we went to a pizzeria for dinner and were disappointed to find out that most of the nightlife was closed for the season, so we just went back to the hostel and had fun by ourselves.
The next day we went to the beach again for most of the day, which was beautiful and sunny again. We then took the bus back to the center so we could be near the train station. We had lunch at a restaurant called EatItaly, where we were SO EXCITED to get hamburgers and french fries (yes it was extremely uncultured of us but maan do we miss those!). One quick 3 hour train ride home, and we were back in Milan.
Next weekend I’m actually going to Munich for Oktoberfest! A bunch of us are going and bringing pretty much only a toothbrush and a change of underwear. We’re planning to be awake pretty much the whole weekend, only sleeping on the 10 hour train. It’s going to be craaazy!
