We set aside a few days to see Bangkok, shop in Bangkok, and also to visit 'the Bridge over the River Kwai' in Kanchanaburi. However, as all travellers know, plans often change. Especially when one comes down with a severe bacterial infection of the stomach. I have since spent 4 days getting to know our hotel room intimately! Luckily for the first time in weeks we have a flushing toilet and a hot water shower.

Alex has seen a lot of the eight flights of stairs to and from our room, the inside of a variety of small food shops (and amazingly managed to come back with some food plain enough for me to eat), as well as the local pharmacy, and bookstalls, all to keep me from a) dehydrating and b) dying of boredom.

Fortunately we did manage an excursion to the Grand Palace, which was impressive and definitely an iconic place, before these exciting events took place. The rest of the plans, however, went out the window.

We have made the best of the situation though- I make a list of presents and things to buy, and my personal shopper trawls the Khaosan Rd stalls to fulfil my needs! He certainly manages to sneak his own purchases in though too! I also sent him to explore more of Bangkok yesterday, and he came back with big round eyes and an empty backpack- apparently the shopping centres here are something else... and not within our end-of-eight-month-trip budget! He informs me one shopping centre has the third floor dedicated to purchasing home entertainment and cinema systems along with BMWs, Ferraris, and Porsches- an interesting mix! p.s. the aquarium is in the basement!

And now we are counting in hours until our flight home. I think I won't be requesting the exit seat this time, but rather the toilet-side seat!

We are both really exhausted, anxious, sad and excited to be coming home, but of course looking forward to having a comfy bed to sleep in (oh and I suppose our family and friends!!)

market
All the way to Bangkok and you did not hit the real markets? Khao San is ok, but nothing like the weekend market or china town. Lots of great bargains there.
