Antlers?
This week's puzzler 08/27/07 Yellowstone National Park. Very spectacular. We had to wait until John was on his way before we talked about how beautiful this place is. He should be leaving shortly (will be 08/28/07 before we are in Bozeman and can be online; currently typing this from our campsite, Tower Campground). We have had two good hikes with great views of the Yellowstone River. Great weather (mid 70s during the day, low 40s at night). We tend to be on the lookout for bison all the time and today we were trying to decide if there were bison ahead of us or just boulders. They were giant boulders or as Jim called them “glacier poop.” Of course we didn’t notice the huge bison to our right since we were so focused on the boulders ahead of us. A very sneaky bison just resting a bit and checking us out (about 100 yards away per Jim, but I think closer). Bison are much more sneaky then you might think. And these bison are a lot bigger than the previous bison we have seen (water and ample food probably contribute to this). We also had a couple of pronghorns come right up to us
as we were taking a break on the hike. Today’s hike was about 10 miles and almost 2000 feet elevation gain. Tonight’s dinner was black beans and rice (seasoned with oranges and chili powder), with tortillas made into “chili powder tortilla chips” via our useful frying pan. Jim complained about the choice of “beans” (doesn’t make a lot of difference in my opinion cause he farts regardless of the food), and even though he complained, he had FOUR servings. Go figure. I would like to add that after 08/29/07 we will be out of pocket and unable to blog or respond to messages for about 10 days, so don't loose heart, we will return. That is if Moose and Bear don't have a fight or we don't get eaten by a grizzly.
addendum: 08/29/07 In Bozeman. John (the Bear) was delayed in arriving due to flight issues and won't arrive until tomorrow. We went into downtown Bozeman to check things out and one side of the street was blocked off due to "construction workers cutting a gas line." Hows that for good timing? And we have picked up a hitcher critter that keeps getting into my gorp. I think it
is living in our car and I think I will pick up a mouse trap this evening. Sorry folks for the ghastly measure, but Jim tried to find him and he is hiding, so no more MM gorp for him. I hope.
This week's trivia question is: What is the origin of the elk antler circle? (picture attached, I hope). First correct response wins an exciting prize.
Squirrel
I would just like to add that I have to get my calories from somewhere, even beans, as I’m burning 10k calories a day and eating 2k. I figure by the time John gets here, I’ll just have him put me in his backpack like an extra water bottle! That aside, Susan's obsession with posting our menus is puzzling even to me. Yellowstone has been pretty cool, as we have seen Mule Deer, large herds of Bison, Pronghorn, Wolves, and, yes, a Grizzly. People are really nice about letting you look through their scopes and pointing out what they're seeing. I looked at the oldest wolf in the park though my binocs and it was just a white speck (he was sleeping). I would never have even noticed it. But through a scope you could see some detail. It's like a big wildlife watching club. So we hope to do more of that when Bear/Cowbus arrives. I know he's probably freakin but we'll make sure he gets his Yellowstone on! The return to civilization here in Bozeman makes we want to get back to the outdoors as fast as possible (hot water notwithstanding). So we'll be gone as soon as he joins us.

Ancient Mystery Uncovered
You've discovered the mysterious prehistoric monument of the American West - "Bonehenge." It's origins are actually unknown, but some attribute it's formation to a moon worshipping cult of antler possessing animals from the neolithic era.
