Northern LightsNorthern LightsNorthern Lights

I was surprised to see I had captured the lights. It was my first attempt and needs some work, but I'm happy to have it. This was at the end of the show. The beginning had more shape and color.
Tuesday August 28, 2007 We stayed up until 1:00 am for the northern lights, but there wasn’t a show. The clouds were thick and we gave up. We were so happy we saw them the night before. I also found a photo of the aurora that I hadn’t realized showed some color. It’s not the best, but will give you an idea. So anyway, we slept in and got on the road about 10:30 am.
We headed out to Fox which was close by the route we were on. Frank wanted to visit a permafrost tunnel he had read about. However, he didn’t know the name of the place or exactly where it was located. We never did find the tunnel, but on the way we stopped at the Alaska Pipeline where you could actually see it up close. Then Frank decided he would tour an old gold drudge which was just off the highway. I decided to forego the tour. He enjoyed it and got a good lesson on how to pan for gold. Every visitor gets their own bag of dirt salted with gold flakes and Frank is confident he’ll be able to find the gold in his dirt when he gets home!
We have decided to return to Denali early next week to see the autumn colors. We’re so close; we thought we’d take the opportunity to see it while we’re here. We’ll probably start home by Thursday. We plan to make a few stops on the way, but not as many as on our way to Alaska.
