Edit Blog Post
Dobro došli,
this is the second and last blog from Croatia.
My travelplans will probalby change for the coming 2 months. I received an email from the school where I was teaching last schoolyear and they asked me to teach from September 3rd untill October 19th (autumn-vacation). They couldn't find another geography teacher yet, so asked me to help them out for those first 7 weeks, while they continue to search for someone else. The costs to change my flight to Kiev, Ukraine will be paid and I'll try to go by the end of October or beginning of November. Of course I accepted this offer, then I will be able to save extra money for the travels. Tuesday or Wednesday I will hear for sure if it's going to happen or not. Will wait for the news...
It has been raining quite a lot in Croatia the past few days, but of course we had nice weather as well. We visited the cities of Pula and Porec. Both are nice, Pula is the largest and nicest and has an own airport. It's an important harbour and there are some industries around....very different to Rovinj and Porec. We
went with a few guests in our own bus. It's a nice city, with many things left behind by the Romans...like the famous amphiteather. In Porec we met with the our colleagues. The organization also stands on a campingsite in Porec and we went there in the afternoon, played some volleyball, went to the town and had dinner there
When we went to Plitvice National Park the first time, our busdriver was Paolo. He's Croatian but speaks Italian as well...so I took advantage of the opportunity to talk and practice my Italian with him. He's a very friendly and intelligent person and he told me a lot about the Yugoslavia war. He has his own bus and takes really good care of the it: no eating allowed in the bus, never! I forgot my small Italian language guide in his bus, but after I called and sent a few sms' he brought the book back to me.
Croatians are generally friendly people. But those working at the cash register or at a counter are not so friendly. I experienced that many times...especially in supermarkets: very impolite and they look at you with a face as if you've insulted them or
something. Many people say that in Curacao people don't know how to offer service to customers and tourists. I never experienced such a bad treatment like here. But...I have to say that in restaurants and shops things are much better...thank God!
Life is still good here on the campingsite Amarin, where we are staying. Nick, Mark, Thijs and Kelly left already and Julian and Joost joined our team just for the last 2 weeks. These last days I'm playing a lot of beachvolleyball, almost everyday. We always play against the animationteam of Amarin, especially against Viktor and Siniša...but they are strong and I didn't manage to win from them yet! Once I played together with Viktor against Joost and Siniša and they won 2-1. The Amarin animation team consists of 10 people, most of the are originally from Zagreb or from further eastern Croatia....and many of them are studying in Rijeka. They play sports during the day, do gymnastics with the guests, aerobics, organize teen disco in the night and also dance during live shows on the terrace. They are very nice people and we always talk to them. We met them last Friday in Monvi. The rest of
my colleagues wanted to go home so I brought them to Amarin and went back to Monvi and I stayed untill 4:45am there with some of the animators, some other employees of Amarin and some Italians there.
I went two times on the water-banana, which is fun!!! Both times I fell of the banana a few times, especially the second time the boat was going very fast! Near Amarin there is a naturist beach and once I was curious and went for a walk there. There are especially elderly people there and a few younger couples as well.
Yesterday, our last Saturday here, I wanted to go to Monvi again for the last time. My colleagues didn't want to so I decided to go alone. The Amarin animators didn't want to go either, but first I went with Siniša and Maja to Polari camping where they went to visit some other animators there. There we had some drinks and later I went to Monvi with Mario, who is one of the animators there. He's a very friendly person and comes originally from Split. We stayed in Monvi untill 6:00am. For this afternoon they invited me to come to Polari
camping, so after I publish this entry I will go there for a few hours.
Tuesday we will leave Croatia by bus and Wednesday we arrive in The Netherlands. It will be strange to be back in Holland....I hope it's for a short time 😊. I will miss Croatia for sure, and the camping here...especially because you make new friends here and then you have to leave again. But that's how it happens all the time.
Ciao,
Elton
