We have now dropped off the RV and are now in our hotel just bordering on Disneyland. So there is no escape. We're going to Disneyland tomorrow. Susan and I have had our couple of days of wine tasting so the party's over and its now back to being slaves. Actually some of those roller coasters look pretty big so I'm looking forward to it myself.
We were in Santa Barbara for the Fourth of July parade and it was very impressive. There is no doubt Americans are very proud. I almost had a lump in the throat myself for a while there. When the Vietnam vets came past all the people sitting on the footpath around us got to their feet. A bit of respect, and I thought that was pretty good. The local Chevy Corvette Club made a lot of noise just because they could. There was a lot of Civil War type stuff, period dress, yankee doodle music, that type of thing. It was colourful. After uttering a few strategic words (just so people would realise we weren't Americans) all the people around us made sure the boys got every single lolly, baseball, set of baseball
cards, and whatever else was thrown out to the crowd within about a ten metre radius of us. Overall they're a hell of a nice people Americans, and okay I milked it a bit there but wherever we've gone the people have made sure to treat you properly.
Spent the night right on the beach just north of Ventura. Literally 10 metres from the surf. And as soon as we got there, as if on cue, a whole lot of dolphins turned up and gave us all the moves you'd see in Seaworld, right there. There must have been a school of fish out there because the pelicans were diving as well. As I say, we've seen it all on the animal front except for the bears. Mitchell is now claiming, with back up from Seth, that he saw a big furry hand with claws come up from behind a rock sometime about a week ago, and that it might've been a bear. Apparently we were wizzing past in the RV and his only collaborative evidence is Seth's testimony not that Mitchy DID see the aforementioned hand with claw but that Mitchy SAID that he saw it. I haven't
felt the need to use the lie detector on either of them at this stage, after all its their holiday. If they want it to be a bear then let it be a bear. In years to come it will no doubt definitely be a bear.
The drive into LA on the freeways was as smooth as silk. I was looking forward to that, just to see what it would be like driving in unchartered territory basically bumper to bumper in 8 lanes of traffic. I'd already figured out that the best thing was to chug along fast enough not to annoy people but slow enough to make some last minute "adjustments" if needed, eg finding myself in the wrong lane. If someone thinks I'm going too slow, no problem, they've got another 3 or 4 lanes to pick from. But now we've got rid of the RV so the next time I have to drive will probably be back in Qtown when I'll have to reprogramme my brain back to getting in the right side of the car again.
I'm writing this in the Lobby which has just become very noisy - a whole bunch of what
seem to be (judging from their carrybags) cheerleaders for the Falcons have just turned up. Not as good in real life as they apparently are (so I've heard) on TV guys, and mostly only about 16.
Anyway, will update you in a couple more days
