[B] Cambridge

After a long week of work (and rain), we had a lazy day on Saturday then headed off for Cambridge on Sunday. It was a bit of a mission finding the train (it was at the wrong station, grrr) and we ended up leaving London at 11.45am and arrived in Cambridge about 1.30pm. Thankfully the weather in Cambridge was a lot nicer than London so we got our first sunshine for the week atop a double decker sightseeing bus.

Cambridge brings a whole new meaning to the term 'University Town'. The whole town is built around and for the University and its 31 Colleges are spread throughout the town.

Cambridge University has a collegiate system of administration which is quite different to the one we know in NZ. Students apply to and join one of 31 Colleges rather than applying to the University itself - the Colleges are responsible for the welfare and focussed tuition of students while the University holds lectures and sets exams. The Colleges are spread throughout the town, having been built at vastly different points in time as the university grew.

The grounds of the University and Colleges are kept really nice and the whole town is quite picturesque - the town reminded me strongly of Christchurch, though it’s a fair bit smaller! The river running through the middle is called the Cam, and punting seems to be a major tourist attraction, though we decided to have lunch instead of getting our feet wet as we were getting pretty hungry by this time.

After lunch, we got back on the tour bus and did a little more sightseeing then wandered into town for a quick cappuccino before catching the train home.

British Summer Weather!
Just as we get the first thoughts about returning home next year, along comes Wimbledon, rain, and a reminder of one of the reasons we left! You guys are seeing parts of England that I've never been to. Keep it up, I enjoy reading about it!

Some "Rendom" Building
Hiya, I think you might find this building to be "Senate House Hill, Old Schools" as that is the Northern face of Kings colledge Chapel to the left. At least the weather improved for you that day. I certainly don't miss the UK weather. Nice photos too.
