We have only been in Alaska for one night/ two days and already have so many great experiences/ stories. First being we finished driving the Alaska highway which was a very fun and beautiful section of the trip. Were now in Fairbanks and absolutly love it!!!! The people have been more than hospitable. The first stop we made was to the local dog park where we met some folks that grew up in the Fort Collins area (just north of Denver on I-25). They gave us their cell numbers and assured us they were more than willing to help show us around. This first encounter with locals was really a tell tale sign of the red carpet treatment we were about to receive. After dinner, by the fire, the man in the site next to us at the campground came by to apologize for running his generator. We told him no problem and offered him a brewsky. He declined but did extend an offer to play cards with him(dave) and his wife (deena) in there plush 5th wheel camperhome. Turns out Dave grew up in Wisconsin, his 5th wheel was plastered with Green Bay Packer gear. I felt right a home (litteraly) playing cards, talking cribage, and sharing stories. Very nice people, both retired teachers. So, the next morning(today) we woke up and hit the dog park again. Wouldn't you know it we met more cool accomidating people. A man who used to live in Colorado Springs offered us his home to use when we need to shower, stay, whatever we needed and more contact info was exchanged. Now here comes the real kicker!! We met one of the coolest guys (Dano) at the dog park as well. After chatting with him at the park (and others) for about an hour he offered to take us out to lunch. I quickly sayed yes. So we followed him to a pub/grill type place where we bought me a beer and bacon cheesebuger and Lisa a Sante Fe salad. Just as lunch was winding down he was like, "wanna go on a boat ride...?" Again I quickly said, "yes!!!" He had a nice speed/fishing boat that he launched right at your campsite in the Chena River. We cruised up river for about 5 miles. Even Chong got to come, which was cool. Then after we reached the cofluence of another river we turned around. Dano's hospitatility still wasn't over he said, "wanna stop at the Pump House for a beer....?" I'm sure you can guess our answer. So after a couple rounds of beers we headed back to the campsite where we parted ways. He said he's gonna drive some firewood over for us later because paying 5 bucks a bundle in a state filled with trees is "crazy." People here have been so willing to invite us into their lives and share Alaska with us and we couldn't be happier about it!
