Monday, June 25, 2007 From Many Glacier to Waterton Lakes International Peace Park, Canada
We woke up to the sound of rain this morning. It wasn’t pouring, but a steady light rain. The Cozy Turtle headed to Canada (which was less than 30 miles away) and we crossed the border around 8:45 am. We drove right up to customs - - - no waiting at all. Border Guard looked at our ID’s and birth certificates and the dogs’ documentation and we were over.
There are very few tourists at Waterton Peace Park. The place is empty. Not sure why, It’s a very picturesque place. There’s actually a small town in the middle of the park and there are basically 2 roads.
The weather was interesting. It was cold, rainy and windy. The mountains were socked in. We drove one of the scenic routes and decided to take a hike, even though the weather wasn’t great. We wanted to try out our rain gear to see how it worked (did very well). We chose a hike that would have some wild flowers. On the way it rained, snowed and sleeted, but the sun also came out for awhile. It was a
very pretty hike on a ridge. We didn’t go far, but enjoyed the old spruce forest and the wild flowers. We saw evidence of bear, but made no sightings. Didn’t see any people either.
We made a stop at the Prince Edward Hotel. The Railroad built the hotel in the 1920’s. It’s a bit more formal than the lodge at Many Glacier. The view from the lobby is fantastic - - mountains and Waterton Lake. We went outside to take more photos and the wind had to be gusting 50-60 mph! It actually pushed me back. We figured if we had walked Martie out there (our 7lb poodle, he would have been like a kite on a leash!).
Tonight the campground is almost empty. We can still hear the wind blowing and some rain on the roof, but we have the heat on and it’s very cozy in CT.
