WWE Wrestling
This was the Ring setup. The Wrestlers came down the ramp under the big screen with their introductions playing and fireworks going off. Very Theatrical. Well after the Monster Truck Jam and the Baseball we decided it was time for another unique Amercian experience - the WWE Wrestling was coming to Jacksonville!! Fi and I thought it would be great fun if we got a group together, had a few beers and really got involved. Well we sent out the invites to everyone we know over and got returns that ranged from 'Are you shitting me?' to 'There's no F@$@ing was I'm spending my money to watch that shit...' (I'm quoting someone Mum, so it's ok to swear). So, it ended up being Fiona and I going by ourselves.
We drove into town and found some cheap parking and arrived at the 'Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena' which is probably just a bit smaller than the Entertainment Centre in Sydney and it was just packed! The line up to get in spilling out on the street - WWE is a bit more popular than I expected. Half the crowd was wearing wrestling T-Shirts with their favorite 'character' on it....it was more like being at a rock concert than Wrestling. Fi and I played spot the mullet, but I managed to edge Fiona out with a top
View from our Seats
Obviously the camera makes it look a bit smaller, but this was taken during the ladder match. quality 'She-Mullet' who was wearing a 'In case you're wondering....I do Hunt' T-Shirt, had no front teeth and was looking after two little ankle biters. She would've fit right in up in Queensland!
We went into the stadium and it was pretty much a sell-out....not sure how many people were there, but the show was being telecast live so there were cameras everywhere. The event we had gone to see was a pretty big event - they call it 'One Night Stand' and they only run it once a year, so we were lucky enough to see a pretty high key event. They had the ring set up with a huge screen TV and a ramp for the wrestlers to walk down. They all had their own unique introductions that played on the screen, and when they came out there were pyrotechnics going off, it really was theatrical.
The crowd kept us entertained - they were so in to it, it was just unbelievable. There was one particular wrestler who the girls seem to like - when he came out it was like Beatlemania - they were just screaming uncontrollably - absolutely deafening. Some people in the crowd
The Ladder Match
You can see the ladder laying on its side between the ring and a table. Later they jumped off a ladder in the ring onto a bloke laying on that ladder! Dunno how they both didn't die! thought it was real - there were two blokes sitting behind us talking throughout the matches (they both had really strong southern accents). They kept saying things like, 'Looks like he's out cold', and 'Dunno how they can take such a whalloping..'
We saw some pretty funny matches....they had standard one on one wrestling, then we had a Tag Team ladder match where the 'World' Championship Belt was hanging from the roof and the first team to retreive it became champions. This was pretty comical, but they did some amazing stunts. Now, at this point I have to say that although it's all choreographed, they really are amazing athletes. I don't know how they do some of the stunts without killing or seriously injuring each other. During the ladder match the laid a ladder down from the outer edge of the ring onto one of the tables surrounding the ring. Then one of the wrestlers just happen to stagger onto it and lay on it. Then on of the other guys climbed onto the top of the 8ft ladders in the ring and body slammed him. They both landed on the ground outside the ring. The ladder he was
The Cage Match
The WWE World Championship Cage Match. You could win by pinning your opponent or climbing out of the cage and getting on the ground. laying on was bent completely in half - how they didn't kill each other I don't know. There was also a cage match to decide the WWE World Championship which was pretty cool....
We also got to see two of the WWE giants going at each other - one dude was over 6' 1" and was just under 200kg, and the other bloke was 7' 0" and about 150kg...not as athletic as the other matches, but they certainly were big boys.
It was a pretty entertaining night, but we just couldn't get into it knowing it is rehearsed. It was pretty impressive though. They refer to it as an entertainment juggernaut, and they aren't wrong. In the end we had to leave before the night finished as the screaming teenage girls sitting behind Fiona had deafened her. By the time we left and got out of the Arena our ears were ringing!! Whilst it was entertaining and a bit of a spectacle, it just doesn't compare to the Monster Trucks, and I don't think we'd go again.
