I took the train from Amsterdam to Brussels for my flight to Slovenia's capital Ljubljana(yoob-li-yana). When I arrived I went straight into town with my couchsurfing host and her friend for a drink. We sat along the river under a willow tree and I introduced myself to Slovenian beer. It was really scenic sitting on the water front as the sunset turned into the afterglow, and candlelight lined the river.
The next day we took a roadtrip out to Slovenia's coastline. On the drive out there I noticed the abundance of trees and greenery. We went to a lookout near the town of Strunjan. It was great to see the ocean again. It was strange to look across the water and see Italy on the other side. Croatia can be seen across the water from Portoroz where we had lunch. We went down to Strunjan for a much anticipated swim. The water was beautiful. I never would have thought the first swim of my trip would be in Slovenia. After soaking up some vitamin D we went to Portoroz where i consumed a pizza the size of my torso.
The following day I took the train to Bled
Ljubljana
Legend has it Ljubljana was founded by Jason and the Argonauts. Here they battled and killed a dragon, now the city's coat of arms. in the country's north-west. The good thing about travelling in a small country is that it doesn't take long to get anywhere. There I stayed in a hostel above a pub - very convenient. There wasn't many people staying there, just 4 aussies and a kiwi. Two of the aussie guys and I rented a row boat and took it out on the lake. It was a hot day and we parked the boat in the middle of the lake and cracked a few tinnies. After rowing around in circles for a while we got the hang of it and rowed out to the island in the middle of the lake where we had lunch. The weather seems to change in Bled very quickly. The hot day and blue skies turned into rain and wind while we were on the island. It made the surroundings seem mysterious and exciting and we didn't get too wet. In the night we practiced our foosball skills.
My last day in Bled I walked out to the Vintgar gorge. It was a long walk but well worth it. The cold air coming off the colder water was a welcome relief from the hot
day. Around every turn was another amazing view.
Slovenia is the prettiest place I've been to. I highly recommend a visit there. The people are friendly, the prices are low and the scenery is spectacular.
