Yesterday, Tommy, Ryan and I were able to play in a soccer game organized by the language school Angie is attending. We gathered, along with 12 others, on a hard-surface field much like a basketball court in the middle of the city. On our way over to the field, we saw a sign indicating that the temperature was 37 degrees Celsius, which is 99 Fahrenheit. I don’t think the air temperature was actually that hot, but it was at least that hot on the playing surface.

We had quite an international group playing. In addition to we three Norteamericanos, there were guys from Spain, Holland, England, Sweden, Japan and Brazil. Tommy and Ryan were the youngest players, and I was easily the oldest. In fact, I am fairly certain that I was more than twice the age of almost every other player out there, and that none of the others was older than 30. I think I was also the only one, besides Tommy and Ryan, who had not played professionally. (Ok, that last line is an exaggeration, but everything else is true!)

It was a successful outing for all of us. I didn’t score any goals, but

I also didn’t get hurt. Tommy and Ryan both played very well and both came close to scoring. We all had lots of fun, despite the heat. Keenan and Angie faithfully sat on the sidelines and cheered for us; Angie may have also laughed at me a few times; she claims she was laughing with me, but I don’t remember laughing at this particular times.

While its tough representing an entire nation, we’re used to it and happy to play that role, and in the end I think we convinced at least a few that Americans can play soccer, even if we don’t play it particularly well. Next week I’m going to try to organize a baseball game; then we’ll show those foreigners (except for maybe the Japanese) a thing or two!

The other pictures here were taken by Angie today at Keenan's school, where it was Mom's day. Since I wasn't there, I can't write anything about it, but I will share the pictures!
