So, we're not so nativeSo, we're not so nativeSo, we're not so native

Well, Erin is. Eli's horse was really little. And he is all that is big and manly, in a button down short sleeve shirt. Erin is presently attaching sleeves to all his shirts.
Well after many glorious days in Santa Fe, it's time to get to work on the ol' blog. Since we last posted, we've njoyed the outdoor pursuits of Northern New Mexico. One of the most beautiful high alpine forests we've seen is in Bandolier National Monument, home, some six hundred years ago to the Pueblo Indians. On an historical note, we found huge bear turds with animal hair in them which led to an intense debate about whether, when face to face with a bear, do you yell loudly to scare the bear or play dead in hopes the bear is a dumb bear. Apparently it depends on the type of bear you are faced with and the outside air temperature, but really, like I am going to go back to AP Bio and study the genus, specius, phyllo dough of a bear when it is screaming "you taste good, sister!" at me. Eli swore he knew what to do, saying the slowest person loses in a bear chase, so does it really matter?

Anyways, we survived the hike and then drove to one of our favorite places in the world, the Valles Caldera. It is a HUGE high

No that's not a horse, it's a great dane, named Cedric. Erin's horse kicked and bit him too. Did we say his name was Cedric?
alpine meadow at 8500' formed out of the collapsed crater of a volcano. It is gorgeous. This place alone is worth coming to New Mexico. More on this in a later blog.

Speaking of horses, we did have our first ride of the trip. My horse was named Savanah and she was a wicked thing that kept kicking Eli's horse Keena. She really had it our for him, but no harm was done, Savanah's aim was not great. Eli was quite the horsemanstudman, and stayed monuted on his mare through a rather spirited gallop around and over sand dunes. There is nothing like dodging sand moguls on horseback and looking back and seeing your beloved hanging on behind you with one fist in the air and a sword on his belt. It was fabulous, although not so fabulous for our guide because while I was leading the gallop, her horse plunged face first into a sand dune and took her with it. At this point, Erin of Arabia took over the guiding and led the chattle to her lair high up on the mesa....see the pictures? All was well in the end, the sand was soft.

After all
"We Have Weak Trees""We Have Weak Trees""We Have Weak Trees"

Ahh, trees. We love trees. Not weak trees.
our outdoor excursions, we had to eat, drink, and be massaged. A trip to the spa yesterday was heaven. Eli and I sat in our private outdoor hot tub surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and fragrant cedar trees and paparazzi. Smelled just like a guinea pig cage, but better. We sat at dusk in the hot tub while it snowed all around us. There is nothing better than a too hot hot tub and a too cool breeze on a Santa Fe night. We then had massages (no happy ending) and gorged ourselves on thai food, ahhh santa fe.

We also saw Tift Merritt and Nickel Creek one night and the concert was amazing! And who knew that Tift Merritt was from Chapel Hill and her music took us right back to our Wilmington days and the best independent radio station ever...The Penguin. Moment of Silence. Eli fell in love with Tift and wanted to invite her to our hot tub, but alas, we couldn't find her after the show. So close, Eli, so close.

We have also relaxed, read, played scrabble. I am sad to say I am down by 100 points, but it is Super
Snow. I Love SNOOOOOWWWW!Snow. I Love SNOOOOOWWWW!Snow. I Love SNOOOOOWWWW!

Cle_tus meets snow for the first time and wins!!
Scrabble and I have a Q. P, and an F...don't tell Eli. I am coming back. (It's hard to come back when you are down 12 games to 1 and an English major against a biology major, but that's what dreams are made of....Eli) But while Eli was doing equations and playing with rats, I was playing with Kevin Costner. So there. (Kevin Costner....who was playing with Cal Ripken's wife---just plain wrong....Taaa-Toonka) This could get ugly, so for now...good nite.
Stay classy San Diego.

I am just getting caught up on some of your postings. Great trip and great pics--you are doing exactly what most of us wish we could be doing! Erin is a talented writer (as well as a hottie). Tift Merritt has nothing on her. Enjoy!
