Well, we arrived in Valencia on Sunday 1st April. First stop, Alinghi Base Headquarters to collect our keys to the our apartment and orientation information on the area. Did a bit of a meet and greet, had some 'gorgeous' photos taken for our security passes....what is it with i.d photos?? I'm sure they had ugly chips installed in all cameras used for this purpose!! So we arrive at the apartment which is great, a few minor details that have to be straightened out but for the most part its great. Its only about a 15min walk to base and an even faster ride. We dont have a car here, but its really not needed as everything is so close and convenient. There is a fantastic park just a minute over the road, The Jardins del Turia, that is actually the old riverbed (they diverted it in the 70's because it flooded the 'old town', perhaps the council back there should take a few lessons from the Spaniards on redirecting rivers!! It is absolutely fantastic, about 9km long, a beautiful mix of playing fields, cycling, jogging & walking paths, fountains, lawns & playgrounds. They even have some of the river water still flowing through in a 'mini river' through the middle. So that is pretty much where Tarquin and I spend most mornings, there, playing on all of the jungle gyms/climbing equipment. And now for the cream......we are surrounded by about 5 different shopping centres!! All multi level with the biggest being 9 levels in total....so basically we have everything at our doorstep. Not to mention the science museum, oceanografic (kind of like a gigantic underwater world). We had lunch yesterday in a restaurant down on the beach, the perfect setting for our first 'paella valenciana' since arriving. Deliciouso!!
Yesterday was full of excitement, we're still in the middle of the 'fleet races' and we won 2 from 2 yesterday. The second race was a real nail biter at the end, it looked as though Oracle BMW was going to take it out but Alinghi romped it in with metres to spare. We watched the win on the big screens at base, clapping and yahooing with everyone as the champagne flowed...(Brendan drank all the glasses that passed by me 😞 )
