The Logo of the Olympic Games in 1980
In Pirita harbour this Olympic Games logo is still standing as a reminder of the past. I have just come back from a quick visit in
Tallinn, Estonia. Strictly this was not a holiday because I was there for a conference. But I had the opportunity to spend a few hours in Tallinn and tried to make the most out of them.
I decided on spending the time on visiting two different sights. First Pirita, an area on the coast of the Baltic Sea just north of the City Centre, and then the Old Town.
The Old Town is easily the biggest tourist attraction in Tallinn. Most parts of the Old Town dates back to the Middle Ages. Tallinn was one of the cities in the trade union the
Hanseatic League. To walk around among the well preserved houses in the Old Town sometimes makes you feel like you have been warped back 600 years in time.
I have visited Tallinn before and I walked around the Old town for three days then. I therefor felt that I didn't have to spend more than two hours or so there on this visit. Instead I decided to make a visit to the olympic arenas in Pirita. In 1980 the
Olympic games were held in Moscow. Moscow doesn't
Ruins of Pirita Monestary
This is the ruins of Pirita Monastery, belonging to the Swedish Briggittine order. This is a ruin but nextdoor there is a working monestary. have access to neither lakes nor the sea so the sailing competitions had to be relocated to Tallinn. It made sense then because Estonia was then part of Soviet Union. But now it looks a bit funny because Tallinn is in Estonia and Moscow is in Russia.
Well, there isn't much more to say about this. I hope you enjoy my pictures because strictly the reason for making this entry on the blogg is so that I can make them available.
