Four things come not back: the spoken word, the spent arrow, the past, the neglected opportunity.----------Omar Ibn Al-Halif

July 10, 2005, Sunday. It is a beautiful sunny day and we are off to Anchorage to explore. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city. The old town is an interesting walk and soon we found the market center. Walking around the booths, of course we purchased some trinkets and gifts. It is really quite a large market area complete with music. After a stop at the ulu store for some more purchases, we set out to find a bike rental.
The Coastal Trail, a bike/hike paved surface, follows the coastline along the mud flats. Lots of birds, ducks, etc, we stopped at Earthquake Park. A memorial to the Good Friday earthquake of March 27, 1964, the most powerful quake (8.6 on the Richter scale) ever recorded in North America, caused tremendous damage throughout south-central Alaska. Given the size and amount of damage, the number of people who perished was surprisingly small- 131.
Back at the bike rental, I promised we would get some cheap bikes to drag around Alaska, Canada, and north-west US and stop the rental business.
Time to “kick-back”. After a shower, we headed out for a movie and pizza, both at the same time. The theater serves food in the viewing area, even beer! It is set up with tables and the whole bit.

July 11, 2005, Monday. Before hitting the road it is time to organize. The Alaskan Highway was tough on the Bothan, so off to the truck wash. Then on we went to shop for groceries, meds, and BIKES. Yes we did buy bikes. Bob has four bikes at home, and I have three, but we didn’t bring them….What were we thinking? Alaska has bike trails everywhere.
So now we have something to use whenever.
On we go to Portage Valley to see…… yes----- more glaciers. We hiked up to the Byron Glacier, then found our way to Williwaw Campground in the Chugach National Forest. The campgrounds in the state and national forests usually don’t have hook-ups, but that’s OK.

Reflect
The four things that come back not, do come back but all in different form. Sometimes regretably.
