Still having a great time over here, trying to fit everything in with the small amount of time I have in Ireland is impossible really. I'm in Limerick now and have been for one night and arrived from Cork where I was for three nights. I used the couchsurfing site for Cork and ended up staying with a bunch of people from Latvia and do they know how to party! I was kinda exhausted by the time I arrived there but noo, I had to go to the local for a few hours and this happened the who time in Cork. I also did manage to see some of the sites though which was good. The old city jail was properly my favorite and they had a really good audio tour of the jail giving history of the whole town and even Tassie got a mention with several hundred from there sent as convicts. Another good place wasa the St Anne's Church where you can go and ring the bells and make a racket for the city to here. They is six ropes hanging down and pulling each makes a different sound so I played three blind mice for the
St Anne's Church
Got To Play A Tune With The Bells Here city to listen to.. Sounded pretty good actually!
The city centre is in a split in the river which goes around each side, was good for keeping approaching enemies from reaching the city as the river made a good blockade all around. They had a lot of trouble with that though since the city was so close to the river any heavy rain would cause the city to flood and there were about 6 major floods that near took the whole city with it!
The Latvians that I stayed with said the hitchhiking was easy to do around Ireland so I thought I'd give it a go. Said the goodbyes, headed out to the boundary of the city and had my sign ready and within ten minutes I had been picked up and was on my way Limerick with a real nice fella. The hour drive passed sooo quick cause he was interested in anything to do with sport, which was really good. He ended up inviting me to his place to meet the family, his wife made some scrambled eggs then she baked up and massive chocolate cake and a pot of tea. Think I left 3
hours latter to where I was supposed to be meeting my next hosts.
I tell ya that I have been very lucky with the people that I have meet on my trip, the Irish are so friendly and welcoming it has been an awesome place to come to. Like the people that I'm staying with at the moment are all taking the day of work tomorrow and taking me on a tour of the Cliffs Of Moher and some other sites around this region and dropping me at the next town I would like to go to! How nice are these people!
There is not really much to do in the city of Limerick, mostly the King John's Castle which I did a tour of this morning. It is 800 years old that place and has had many battles here the most famous is when the English and Dutch finally defeated the Irish and French forces and the Treaty of Limerick was signed. The battle had been going on for 2 years all over Ireland and came to a close here in Limerick, the castle has a great tour explaining the whole history of the war and other
battles that have happened over the 800 years. The city used to be in two parts, either side of the river. On one was the Irish the other was the English and each fortified there part. The town was first settled in 920AD by Vikings.
I think I am going o go to a small town called Doolin on the West coast for a couple of nights. It is supposed to have some good fishing around the place so could go on a charter for the day and see if I can catch a thing or two other than a cold, although the weather has warmed up quite a bit since last week which even the Irish said was miserable.
