Greetings from the island of Ko Samui, Thailand! Myself and Brenda have been up to loads since arriving on the island, though to be honest i feel like i am on the set of "Lost" at times. Being on an island with major jet planes flying just feet above our heads and the sound of all sorts of long legged creatures all around us just gives a reminder of Gilligans Island/Lost. On Paddy's Day we went on an Island Saffari and went elephant trekking on a big spotted ear elephant named "Chumpu" it was soo much fun, myself and Brenda were holding on for dear life. It was just like riding on a horse, you can control the direction the elephant moves in by using your feet to steer her ears. We nearly lost our lives when we saw the hill we had to trek up, but even worse was coming down it! Then we went to an elephant show, where I got an elephant massage from a baby elephant (3 yrs old), and being oooh soo clever I had a sweet in my mouth....so i got her trunk wrapped around my neck in her effort to get the strawberry sweet
Ko Samui Airport
See..it literally is a bamboo hut! out of my mouth! After this we went to a monkey show and now i officially want one, their hands are soo soft and they are just soo cute. Its weird though, even when your walking up the main road here the thai people just throw monkeys at you to try to get you to pay for a photo with one. I actually saw a guy holding a wee baby last night and feeding it from a Starbucks cup..ha. Next myself and Brenda went on the ATV Quad Bikes around the dirt track, this was sooo much fun. I was like evil knievel and brenda was like driving Miss Daisy....pour thing was gonna get a parking ticket so I had to lap her a few times, leaving the dust behind...we really enjoyed ourselves on those.Once this was done, our tour guide Ame took us to go ox cart riding around the rice fields which are submerged in water. Then he cooked us some thai salad...with red CHILI!!! HOT HOT HOT! We've learned that the term "Ferang" means white person, so when the thai people laugh and u hear that word u know they are laughing at you about something. Later
that night we decided to celebrate St. Paddy's at "Tropical Murphys" pub which is located here on Chawang Beach, the place was jammers and we wore our festive green shirts and watched some rugby matches. We even attempted to drink Sang Som which is thai whiskey served in buckets....lets just say one bucket between us was MORE than enough for the night! That night we met a girl named Aoife from Dublin who was just returning from 3 and a half years abroad in Sydney. She had nothing but good things to say about her trip and was soo excited to share all her tips with us. We also managed to run into some Canadian policeman and get photos with their badges, etc. The next day we woke up and decided to go jet skiing, so we hit the clear blue warm waters and drove around the island which seems smart until u realise all the beaches look the same and have a hard time figuring out where to return the bloody thing..ha.. but we eventually found it. It must be said that Brenda aka "Miss Daisy" picked up the pace on the waters, and became a bit of a
demon on the open watersl. At one stage i think we might have hit something, it was either a rock, a persons head or perhaps the engine falling out..this is still open for debate..ha..jk. After this we just chilled on the beach and met some people later that night who set off firecrackers on the beach, it was soo pretty in the sky and some twirled in the sand. We decided to make our last night a sensible one as our flight to Bangkok was at 6am on the 20th of March, so we slept for about an hour after spending the night chilling on the beach, arranged to check out of our accomodation and got a taxi to the bamboo hut airport at 4:45 am.... one small problem.... TODAY IS THE 19TH not the 20th!!! Dumb and dumber here were a day early for the flight! So that gives you some insight into how disorienting all of this is starting to get, the days are just slipping around us I think we seriously need to invest in a calender because each day we wake up it takes us about 30 minutes to figure out what day it is. So
Sang Som
Cheers! while we were slightly tired, we couldn't help but laugh, got in another taxi, and begged security to give us back our room key which we had handed in about 30 minutes earlier. ... now thats a whole other story, we got back and one security man claimed he didn't have the key, that we never left one, so ballsy here walks past him to the room to discover the door is open and lights on and the other security man is sitting on our bed, watching tv, drinking MYcoke, and waiting on what appears to be "female company"....well we soon got him out..ha.. So we are taking advantage of our extra day, just chiling, trying to wash our clothes in the sink (which is hard when their is no stopper), and might go to the fire show tonight on the beach, there is another BBQ tonight. All and all this island is amazing, its soo beautiful, but its also slighlty disturbing to see the poverty that the locals themselves live in. The tourist industry here is really all that keeps them going, they think all white people are minted. Oh, the other really disturbing thing here is all the
OLD WHITE MEN and the young thai women--sickos, betya they all have wives at home! Anyways, I am having a blast here and can't wait to go to New Zealand tomorrow. Its soo surreal sitting here in an internet cafe, hearing all the taxis going up and down the street, and the vans advertising the Thai Boxing knowing that if i was at home i would be in the office as I type. Enjoying every moment, but still defo missing home and my family and friends😊 Hope yur all well
