Late rising today - indicates we are now on China timeazone. Rosy has been raving about the pigeon in HK, so early this morning we popped out and grabbed to pigeons and a 'rib' of pork with crackling. Needless to say, having pigeon for breakfast was an interesting expereience. Its liek chicken but with more flabour and smaller bones. The port, we agreed, was disappointing, but its possible that because the pigeon was so tasty that the port wasn't so flavourful.
AFter that we lounged around and decided to commit to find out where Rosy used to live.
Rosy left Hong Kong at teh age of 6, that is 18 years ago. We had spoken about finding Rosys old home on a number of occassions including the night before over the Japanese dinner and copious red wine. Rosy had asked the manager of the establishment whether he knew the place where Rosy remembered living, and apparently he had lived there for 28 years.
AFter checking out of our hotel, we left our luggage in the safe hands of the concierge and bought MTR tickets to the residential area of "Tai Koo". I think Rosy was very... nervous, deep in thought as to what it meant to her to visit this place.
Seriously? ITs moments like the ones I"m about to describe that i live for.
So we jumped off the train at Tai Koo and didn't know where to go! We had a studied look at the map and nothing came to Rosy immediately. So we came to the conclusion that a shopping centre would be a good place to start, so we picked the biggest one of the three in the area.
We walked out of the centre and Rosy recognised something... She remembered catching the bus to school from the stop at the centre.
We walked up the road a way and Rosy said she recalled a bend in the road and a park near where she lived. We came to a kindergarten and she remembered that her brother went to the preschool. And there was a bend and a park in front of the kindergarten.
We kept wandering and for onc eim y life I didn't have to say anything. We went into the park and sat down on the seats. Rosy remembered tire swings in the playground, but there were none there now.
Rosy Texted her Dad for confirmation of where we were. We walked back towards the shopping centre but before we went back we went up some stairs the the apartment estates quadrangle. We stood in the middle of seven apartment towers each around 30 storeys. Rosy remembers they lived on level 26. She recognised a fountain nearby, and even said she has photos of her as a child near one of them.
I tried to styay quiet still while Rosy absorbed and processed where she was. She recognised the street and the park and finally we recieved a text from Rosys Dad confirming that we were indeed in the estate she used to live.
In terms of coincidence... we chose a shopping centre, an exit and a road to walk down. That the first road we walked down would be the right one is more than an accident.
Rsy made some videos and took some photos. The whole process was calm and slow - nothing was rushed. I was buzzing whenever she said she remembered something familiar. IT was such a privilege to be there with her - to know that she was connecting with parts of herself long buried.
After such a monring, the afternoon was bound to be slower - and it was - in its own Hong Kong fast-paced way.
Angela and Ed (Ang's husband) asked us out for HIgh Tea at the HOtel Landmark. This entailed tea and numerous morsels of food-based goodness - a fusion of dim sum(yum cha) and traditional English afternoon tea. We spent more than 2 hours drinking tea and delighting in the food before we had to head back to the hotel to pickup our things and head tot he meeting place for the tour group - The Booth Hotel.
We arrived at the Booth Hotel around 6:30pm and was greeted by the lady to brief us, and was promptly informed that were expected by 5pm... oops!
We came back for an additional briefing at 7:30 and met a group that was doing the first same 17 days as us - therefore finishing in Beijing while we will carry on to Shanghai and Yellow Mountain.
So the breifing wasn't particularly interesting aother than to tell us taht we were due for pickup at 6:45am the next day for a transfer to the ferry terminal bound for China.
So we left the hotel to find some food and maybe pamper ourselves for the last time. Rosy and I went to the hairdressers and she goes some streaks and I got a protien treatment and a blowdry style. All up that was around $250HK which is about $100AUD for both of us.
After this, we grabed some bread rolls and drink and decided to go online at the hotel to catch up with our emails and blogs. Then it was pretty much straight to bed...
