From coast to coast lay many tales...

I clamber awkwardly over the rocky shore. A few palm trees bow to the whisper of the winds. The virgin sands are fresh, clear and inviting. I look over my shoulder and watch the track of footsteps following me like a shadow. Hermit crabs race each other across their sandy savannah. I look out to sea. I can taste the warmth of life on the breeze.

One ´cannot discover new oceans unless he has courage to lose sight of the shore.´ (André Gide)

I am a long way from home. Out here where life travels with the waves and to the smooth, seductive reggae beats, I feel the distance. But it is this distance that captures the beauty before me: the colours are brighter, the sun is warmer and the air is purer. ´Pura Vida,´ as the locals deliver somewhat religiously, their proud connection with this blissful lifestyle.

I´m brought back to reality by the sound of falling branches. A monkey pounces down from his leafy hideaway and lands softly on the white sand. It is in search of food and seems unperturbed by my presence. In fact, as I slowly approach, it only pauses its´ foraging when I am almost within touch. It glances at me curiously and I am lost in our likeness. It takes a small apple-like fruit and nibbles at it animatedly. I am graced to be in its´ presence and with the sun on my shoulder and the ocean wind in my hair, happy to be in this country.

From coast to coast we travel, my girlfriend and I, in search of endless shores, pristine jungles and invariably, ourselves. Costa Rica is a land of diversity, from beaches to jungles to volcanoes and chaotic cities, it is a tourist nation well traveled but a place where it is easy to get lost in these lands.
