The JugglersThe JugglersThe Jugglers

They were really good.
As soon as we got up it was obvious the mozzies had feasted on us.

Matt : 34 bites
Leanne : 23 (2 massive ones, including one buttock bite)

Got some mosquito repellent from Boots. The Thai label said it lasts 7 hours, peeling that off was the original Uk label saying 4 hours. You can't trust anything here.

Walking around taking photo's we decided to do a bit about the whole TAT/Tourist information thing here - Leanne is quite militant about this, broken civil rights and withheld information are not things she seems to agree with. Found a problem. The 53 bus to the Train station - It's on 2 sides of the road and nobody seems to know which goes to the train station (Very mixed and Varied answers - Note, Thai schoolkids are taught to misdirect and mislead Farang as far as possible, so usually take the opposoite direction that they say.) Started taking Malarone.

At night the hotel tried to tell us we had not payed. Big argument, obviously we had paid. Eventually the same woman that took the money off Leanne in the Morning said that she would pay for us. She

It was once, obviously a military fort. Now it's a park to chill out on and escape the Tuk-tuk drivers and various tauts and the hedonism of Khoa San.
had obviously pocketed the money.

Thu 8th:
Got up early and packed for our journey, refused to give key back untill the deposit was returned (same woman as yesterday, she obliged) and then we had a relaxing day sat at the park by Phra Sumen fort. We watched the jugglers and had Pad Thai and sat tin the sun, it was nice. Then got the 53 (Getting off at the same time as everyone else, and getting on the the other 53 which is the 2nd leg of the journey - you pay once for both). We set aside a bit of time incase things went wrong, so we got to the sation without a hitch and were 4 hours early.

To kill some time we had KFC and Dunkin Donuts Coffee/Tea. At KFC we met Daniel and Emma a young couple doing a similar route to us, they were from Guernsey and had never been abroad before (although Daniel had been on a train once when he came to England)

The train. We escaped.
You have to board 20 mins before departure here, so we did. Being English we hadn't really seen a sleeper train before,

It was really good, and pretty, and shiny and Gold.
first impression wasn't good, but it was actually quite pleasant - apart from the toilets. We didn't sleep too well, but we did get out of Bangkok. Must add that we both felt a lot safer having Pacsafes and padlocks on our bags. In the morning we went to the bar to get Tea and Coffee and to have a cigarette, where we met Miet.

Miet is a middle aged Belgian Lesbian woman, who has friends in Chiang Mai, her brother moved to Laos a few years ago and she was very helpful in giving us a map, directions, ideas on what to see etc. and an E-mail address for her brother if we get stuck in Laos. Her business here is to look at starting to buy lubricant here and sell it to sex shops back in Belgium at an extortionate profit. It's a market, and money is money.

The Jugglers all had these crazy bikes, and they all had stickers that said : "Bicycling, a quiet statement against the oil wars." They were mostly French.

mozzy bites
Hi both You sound like you're having great fun overall but on the subject of mosquito bites have you tried using lavender oil - it keeps most nasties away and smells nice too(to people anyway) should be quite cheap and use it mixed with some unscentd lotion (high spf factor) you can also mix it with cream (cosmetic variety) and slather it all over at night. It's supposed to also have calming effects and to help restful sleep. Then again if you're lucky perhaps the mozzies will just decide to leave you alone anyway.
