This was a massive detour undertaken with the big risk that we were unsure if any of the ruins were actually open due to the snow. Thankfully Spruce Tree, the third largest ancestral puebloan dwelling was open, and we arrived in time to take a tour. The site was very interesting, although we did have to wait a long time to get a clear photo, without a whole throng of brightly coloured American tourists!

After our visit to the park, we drove almost all the way to monument valley (well Alex did the actual driving!), stopping for the night in Mexican Hat. It is a small place (blink and you miss it), with nothing there in the winter save a couple of motels with no-one at the desk. However we eventually struck lucky, and a really nice guy who was renovating his parents' hostel gave us a room. He even reconnected the satellite for the tv, and let us use his microwave to cook dinner so we wouldn't starve! You meet all sorts travelling, and this one certainly made our night a lot better.

Photos to come once we find a computer that is in the C21st and actually has a usb port!

I remember Mexican Hat!
We had a meal here on July 31st 1989, stopping in the hot dusty early evening at a strange little diner practically cut into the rock. Then onward through a dark gold and purple sunset and an electric storm, past the "Mexican Hat" eroded rock formation and staying at Pioneer House at Recapture Lodge, run by geologists. Thinking of you! Lots of love, Mum and Dad G.
