Trostberg, Germany
The main drag of the town. It was closed for the festivities that were to be held later that night. (June 24 through June 26 2006)
June 24
Our train arrived at Traunstein mid-afternoon and Sylvia was waiting for us. She was another friend that my brother had studied with in Portugal. Our decision was to spend a relaxing weekend with her and her family before we moved onto East Europe--this was our last stop in Germany. Bavaria is beautiful, and small town after small town fill the roadway from Traunstein to Trostberg. The day we arrived was hot and the sky was clear, perfect weather to start out the weekend.
As we drove towards Trostberg, the Alz River enchanted us, and we wished we could jump in--but we never got a chance. Once in town we dropped our bags off at Sylvia's place, met her family, and headed into the center of town. Her friend joined us, Sassy, and we went for some ice cream at an Italian ice cream eatery--very delicious. The town is very small, but very charming. The main drag of the center of town is beautiful, but no one was out. The street was closed for the festival they were holding later that night.
From there we went to Sassy's house to watch the Germany game
Trostberg, Germany
The center of town against Sweden. A beautiful house, we were able to relax on the couches and recover a bit from the night before. Germany won 2-0, and we had a bit of entertainment as Sassy argued with her father. We said goodbye, but met up later.
Early evening came, and we walked to the center of town for the festivities with Sassy and her boyfriend, Sylvia, and the three of us. A procession passed us, with individuals with great dresses. We joined the public and sat at the picnic tables that lined the street, and scarfed down traditional Bavarian food, with liter beers. We have no idea how many we drank, but we got up and walked the street. The atmosphere was great--kids running around, their parents drinking, while live music played from the stage. Parts of the street were packed, and games were all around us. Tron and Little Boi took their chance at cutting wood. Not their game, and some laughed at their attempt. Not to mention my brotehr nearly cut one of his fingers off.
More of Sylvia's friends had joined, and we enjoyed the night. The good thing about this place was we could use the restroom at

The inn and restaurant just of the lake's shore. any store or restaurant without purchasing anything.
We passed the time by talking to random people and beer vendors. Sylvia's friends enjoyed my brother's impersonation of Lil' John. We headed to bed soon after midnight, just after the festival was dying out.

We woke up late morning, had a wonderful breakfast--with delicious homemade jelly. Our bellies were happy, and we headed out for some water. We didn't jump into the Alz, but instead we headed to the Chiemsee (a huge lake in the region, 30-40 minutes away from Trostberg.) Another wonderful and beautiful days, the views that the drive provided were magnificent, and it was a privilege to see this part of Bavaria. We came in from the north, and drove on the western bank of the river. After 10 minutes or so of driving, we spotted a great place to park the car. An inn and restaurant in a huge building were located int he middle of a field of tall grass. What seemed to be a church was also built on this field, and in no way looked out of place. We walked a bit and then found some grass close to the shore, and

After being in the sun for a little bit, and talking to a German family that enjoyed the lake very much, we jumped in, and enjoyed the cold water. Sylvia informed us that a duck had been found dead only two weeks before from Bird Flu. We weren't going to miss an opportunity to jump in a lake that who knows if we will ever be able to see its waters again. Others were doing it and no health risks seem to be in play.
After a dip in the water, we headed to the restaurant for a bite to eat. Some more Bavarian food and beer, and again our bellies were happy. When we arrived back to our spot Sassy and the others from the night before joined us, and laid in the sun passing the time with conversation.
We said our goodbyes to everyone and headed back to Sylvia's house for a goodbye cook-out her family made for us. Beer and steak, with great company capped off a wonderful weekend. Everything was delicious, and the conversation

The lake. with Sylvia's family was homey. After cleaning up, we sat and watched the Portugal game against the Netherlands, while a lightning storm hit the town. It was quite a scene outside, very beautiful in a way. The game was played dirty by both sides, and tempers flew. Shoving matches broke out every five minutes, and it seemed by the end of the game, Portugal's head coach was about to murder someone. In the end Portugal won.
June 26
We woke up around 7 and 8 in the morning to head to Traunstein. We had breakfast with the family, said goodbye to Sylvia's family, thanked them for everything and headed to the station. There, a short goodbye to Sylvia, as she had to go back for school, and we jumped on the train to Salzburg. Trostberg was great, and the hospitality we received was even greater. Thank to everyone there.
