The Eurpean settlers who settled this land must had a lousy imagination or just couldn't be bothered. Almost every name of a county, town or mountain is either from the old country (oxford, canterbury, belfast), Maori (stuff I can't pronounce with a lot of Ws and Ks) or just plain stupid (long stream, mt horrible or even christchurch).
Basically I find this related to the relationship of this land with humans in general. Human beings didn't evolve here, they were introduced. Even the Maori people are basically settlers from Polinezia or something. The land is still pretty empty, nature more dominant than civilization. Most of the places around here don't have enough human history around them to have proper names. So they got ready-made names.
