Myrtle Beach to Near Orlando

1/14/07
Got up and headed for Charleston. Got there around 10:00. This is a very historical City. I enjoyed my short stay there immensely. I took a carriage ride tour. I decided against going to Savannah, because I felt there would be a lot of similar structures there, with a little less history. I made it to the Orlando area around 9 and was spent. I looked for a cheap motel. The best I could find was a place that is being remodeled and it wasn’t clean. It cost $40 a night so that was good, but I am not sure it was worth it. I would have rather paid a little more I think. Actually went to another motel and sat in their lobby using their wifi most of the night.

I wanted to see at least one plantation on this trip. This is the one I saw.

A lot of neat trees on this plantation.

The owners of this plantation wanted to cut the big oak tree down in front of their house. George Washington told them that the hands of man cannot make another oak. They decided to save the tree. I probably would have cut it down as it did block the view, but I guess if George Washington tells you something you listen.

The Washington Oak. Would you have cut it down?

Used to have huge rice fields in this area. If you close your eyes can you see this area filled with workers?

Can you even see me? This is a huge tree. I guess if George Washington laid eyes on it you should expect a big and old tree.

The baskets these folks make are awesome!

Very cool baskets. I forget what they make these out of. The basket making knowledge is simply passed down from generation to generation. One guy would not let me photo his baskets. Not sure why?

Supposedly this husband and wife could not agree on the style of house so they built half in one style and half in another. Colonial and Victorian maybe? I forget.

Supposedly a father wanted his three daugters out of his house so he built them these three houses. One daughter was a brunette, one a red head and one a blonde.

I forgot what the tour guide said about this littl guy. Isn't he both cute and scary?

The tour guide said this may be the oldest home in Charleston. The tour guide had a great southern accent.

Do you think they would allow trees to hang over the road like this in Illinois. I do not.

This is without a doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. They were remodeling it and everything was grimey, but for $40 what can you expect?

Hey, now you can say you stayed at the worst hotel ever. But really, I think it was just a prep for some of the hotels you may encounter in Europe!

Don't sweat it. I sent backup CD's to you on Saturday so the photos are stored and I have emailed the text of my journal to Jay so that's backed up as well. Thanks for trying. This website occasionally has a few glitches.

We will see. I am intriguied by the anonymity. Need hints. That hotel was worse than sleeping outside because the sheets even seemed grimy. At least while sleeping outside you have a sleeping bag that is clean on the interior. I should have brought my sleeping bag inside the motel and slept in it.

I looked at the site a little closer...I may have to copy when I take my BIKE adventure this summer....Now to find a laptop that will take the ride...I agree you should have used your sleeping bag in the hotel, but you didn't get wet.. Keep up the good work Bill

It's a pretty good site. Thanks for the interest. Plan to have my Key West entry added today. Please notify me when you go on the trip so I can check out your blog.

I'm sorry you skipped Savannah - it's a neat river town! Rob and I were there just last year around this time. It's the first 'planned' city in the US, and many movies have been filmed there. Keep it in mind for your next 'off the grid'.

I considered it, but thought Charleston would be very similar. I was in a hurry to get to Key West for the Sailing Regatta and had to cut out a stop somewhere and that was the one I axed. The next off the grid trip might not happen for a couple years, but I would definetly like to see the city someday! In San Diego right now. A little behind on the blog. Going to the San Diego Zoo today.
