This is a view of the city from Park Guell.
Hi all! I went on a trip to Barcelona this weekend, it was very last minute, but a really fun trip! I went with 5 other girls and we stayed in a hostel. The hostel was interesting, the people there were really nice and helpful, but the room was cramped with 16 people, and the bathrooms weren't so clean, but it was a good deal for 15 euros a night. We went by train on Friday afternoon, and it took 4 hours to get there. Then we went to the hostel and then went out to dinner. We ended up going to a pretty expensive place, but we were tired of searching around so it worked. We went with an Australian guy who we met at the hostel, he was really interesting and fun to talk to.

The next morning, we went to the Picasso museum, it was really cool! My favorite part was when we saw Picasso's version of Las Meninas, which was originally a really famous Velazquez painting that we had seen in Madrid at the Prado. The exhibition was cool because they had a video presentation showing the original Velazquez and then Picasso's version and what all

the people in the picture had transformed into. It is hard to explain, but you can probably google image search it and see what i mean. The Picasso museum was so interesting because it showed a lot of his earlier works, where he was amazingly realistic and a great painter, then showed the transformation into his Cubism that he became so famous for.

Then we split the group up and four of us walked around Barcelona looking at all the sites. I had seen a show one time about Gaudi, who is an amazing Modernist architect...you can see the pictures below to see his unique style. I went into La Pedrera, a big apartment building that he made, and also we all went to the Sagrada Familia, it was a cathedral that he devoted the latter part of his life to. It was quite stunning, it was so large, and still in construction, so it was interesting to be in a cathedral and also a construction site at the same time. We went up into the tower of the Sagrada Familia, which had great views, and it was an experience going up these tiny spiral staircases! That is mostly

There was a lot of space to hang out and meet people, and the colors were very funky!
what we did, then at 7 we were supposed to meet the others and see a fountain show (where the fountain changes colors and moves to the music)...it was amazing!!! The four of us watched it 3 times and couldn't get enough of it, but the other 2 who went other places during the day were too late to see the show. Anyway, I have a video that I took with my camera, and I will try to put it up here, but I am not sure if it will work. Then we went back to the hotel and prepared to go out and see what the night life was like in Barcelona, it was a pretty fun night.

The next morning, we went to Park Guell, which had an amazing view and more Gaudi architecture. To get there we had to climb stairs and escalators in the streets to get to the viewing area, but it was well worth the effort! We hung out at the park all morning, then caught a bus back to Valencia that afternoon/evening. It was a great trip overall, we saw all the big sites in a short period of time.

Then

Matt is an Australian guy who we met at the hostel and went to dinner with, they gave us really long straws to drink sangria with! I think they were making fun of us silly Americans...
Monday, I relaxed and uploaded the rest of the Madrid pictures, which was exciting...so check those out. I am slowly working on uploading more, but it is hard with my highly unreliable and slow internet.

This is the old Cathedral in Barcelona, we didn't go in, since it cost money and there was lots of construction (so I tried to take a picture of the stuff not under construction).

I went inside La Pedrera and there was an exhibit on Gaudi in the attic, and a model apartment of how it would have looked when it first opened. This is a model of the building.

This is how he designed the building, with hanging chains and then looking in a mirror underneath to see how the building would stand...and it turns out this is mathematically perfect, and he didn't need to do the complicated math! Genius!

These are some of the decorations on the rooftop (they could be chimneys as well, I am not sure, they are very cool either way!)
