We said goodbye to Perth and Western Australia just before New Years Eve and boarded an internal flight to Adelaide to see in 2007 and relax a few days before touring the Great Ocean Road on the way to Melbourne. It seemed quite strange to be leaving, as we had come to see Perth as our 'home from home' in many ways, but also we were excited by the prospect of being back on the move again, after staying such a long time in one area.

Adelaide is a laid back town (yes, even after being in Perth) and we were both taken back by how certain aspects reminded us of Northern cities back home. The main shopping street had similar charecteristics to central Leeds and Newcastle, with a wide pedestrian prominade flanked by victorian articecture competing with post-war high-rises. In many ways, a much more beautiful city centre than Perth, and perhaps a taste of what is to come with Australia's East Coast.

New Years Eve was pretty quiet and we joined the crowds on King William Street for the city firework display before heading back to our room for a late night (early morning) bottle of wine.

The next couple of days we spent visiting the museums and art galleries, as well as wandering round trying to take in city life in Adelaide. It's a very cultural city, although we have to admitt, as interested as we are in museums, we found the Museum of South Australia a little trying - it's probably more to do with the fact we've been to so many similar museums over the last few weeks, rather than it being particularly boring, but we didn't enjoy it as much as our stroll through the botanical gardens. Here we found a rather impressive wine centre, with displays that let you smell the different aromas from the wine, exhausting work and deserving of a drink (sadly we couldn't afford the bar prices, but still it was a nice day out and we are now experts in regional wine - so off to the supermarket!).

That night we finally got to see Borat at the local cinema, we'd been denied so many times around South East Asia, it's either been banned or severly delayed in both Malaysia and Singapore so we've been meaning to see it since we landed in Australia. For those who

We took this photo purely because the building looked so different to the rest of Adelaide. It looks more European than Australian.
haven't seen it, beware of the naked wrestling scene, it totally took us by surprise and we've been having flashbacks ever since.

Our last day before we hit the Great Ocean Road was spent at the coast, at Glenelg, a small town connected to central Adelaide by a tram line which has been used since before time (we forgot the date, sorry). There is a regular ultra-modern tram and an old Beamish-style service which runs from time to time for the benifit of tourists (we presume, either that or the coucil is slow at replacing the rolling stock). Sadly we didn't get the old fashioned version (the modern one had air-conditioning and it was pushing 40 degrees outside), but we took lots of photos for your viewing pleasure.

Anyway, we have to hit the road again, so Happy New Year everybody! Our next entry will be from Melbourne, speak to you then!
