Il Duomo
the facade Saturday morning we departed from Rome, walking over to the train station nearby and taking a bus to the main train station. that's when the drama began with our tickets. i dont' really feel like getting into it, but basically me and caroline boarded the 12:30 train with only a confirmation number from the 11:30 train that we missed due to the fact that the machines refused to print our tickets. luckily the train guy was niced and trusted that we did indeed purchase tickets online the previous day. arriving in florence it was rainy and i purchased my FIFTH cheapass umbrella from the street since i managed to lose my previous one in Rome, I guess. we were to be staying with Mo's friend Melanie in her apartment there, plus with her roomates of course. her place ended up being right in Piazza de Duomo, aka the giant Basilica of the Duomo was literally across the narrow street. it was ridiculous to the point of it being obstructive. i now feel totally shafted with my shit location in madrid. oh well.
our first afternoon we meandered all around the city. seeing as i had done no research on anything,
Castello di Vincenzo
i think that's what it is... and the sights weren't so blatantly obviously as say, the colosseum, i really have no idea what we saw. we did, however, end up at the famous Academia where we say Michaelangelo's David statue. it was huge and quite striking, i was honestly impressed, and since i really have no appreciation for art (sorry, can't do much about that), that's saying a lot. anywho, we continued walking around, i attempted to do some shopping (failure), etc. until returning to the apartment to regroup before dinner.
that evening was our "nice meal" so i picked out a place recommended in the book, and we certainly weren't let down. for starters we had bruschetta with tuscan salami, which was quite delicious. my first plate was pasta with wild boar sauce, the wild boar apparently being a Florenzian specialty. after that came my rabbit with olives in a tomato-based sauce. washed that down with the house red. all of that plus bread and water and i barely broke 20 euros. good times. post-dinner was showering, etc. before the Florence shit show. the evening involved wine, vodka, peach vodka, kahlua, whiskey, tequila, jaegger, and long island iced tea. i'll leave it at that.
the next morning we got up around 1030 and caroline scurried off to wait in line at this one museum. again, i was florence-retarted and couldn't tell you where that was or what was in it. she had to wait over 2 hours to get in, but seeing as she's an art history major, it was worth it for her. mo and i spent the day shopping, though besides a postcard i didn't end up with anything. we regrouped at the apartment at 3:30 and got our stuff and headed off to the airport shuttle. our time in italy was coming to a close. our flight to milan was smooth, and we had good pizza there during our 3 hour layover. i also made friends with a pair of sunglasses named Georgio Armani. oops. at least i was in the fashion capital of europe. our flight to madrid was delayed, but it was smooth and i got back to my place by 12:30 that evening/morning.

Oh, Jeff, How will you ever be able to eat plain food and drink Gancia after eating such exotic dishes? Don't expect wild boar and rabbit for Christmas dinner at our house.....Love you....
