Me, Shanna and Dan
Our first reunion on Shelly Beach, Manly. My first week in Sydney I was kept busy organising my new job, accomadation etc as well as doing some sight seeing on the rare occasions that it wasn't pouring down. The weather really does make a huge difference to people's moods and everyone in the hostel seemed permanently glum but the sun refused to shine.
On the up side I managed to find the vets I was going to be working at and felt pretty confident after the few hours I spent there looking round etc that I wouldn't have a problem fitting in and was looking forward to getting stuck in to some more nursing.
I also mangaed to solve the slight problem of being homeless at the end of the following week and got myself a room in a shared backpackers house. It was like a little backpacker community with about 20 houses and I was blessed with fab housemates.
On my second morning in Sydney I was determined to see its two most famous landmarks so pulled on my mac and trudged down to the harbour. Even in the pouring rain I couldn't help feeling a tingle go down my spine and a huge grin
Me and Shanna
One of our many nights out. spreading across my face - I was actually looking at the Harbour Bridge and Opera House 😊 (but after 30mins i had to give in because i was getting v.soggy!)
I arrived on a saturday and by the thursday I had started work at the vets. It wasn't hard to adjust to it because it was very similar to work back home with the biggest difference being the huge variety of sick and injured aussie wildlife which I got to see up close! The biggest difference to my work in Perth was the amount of responsibilty the nurses were given - lots, which was refreshing.
After moving out of my hostel and into my new house the following weekend, I headed to Bondi with some people from the hostel to make the most of the sunshine and check out all the surfers and other assorted fitties on the sand and in the sea 😊 The water was absolutely freezing and the waves were rather large; by the end of our session in the water both Ashley and I had made seriously undignified trips up the beach on our arses with our legs in the air as the water swept
us up and carried us! I think I had half the beach in my bikini by the end of it!!
The following tuesday marked my first reunion - I met up with Shanna after nearly 7 months apart and it was soooooooooooo great to see her and be able to have a good old natter about what we'd both been up to. One of the great aspects of travelling is meeting so many cool, interesting, new people but once in a while its also nice to not have to introduce yourself, tell them where you been, how long you've been here and where you are from!
Friday saw us having our first night out together and boy did we make up for lost time - what started off as going to a night market and then a quick drink turned into a Tooheys fueled night that ended at 3am after meeting up with some of my housemates in a backpackers bar and dancing the night away 😊
The following evening we all headed out again to Empire in Kings Cross (the red light district in Sydney) for one of the guys birthdays. Another crazy night out ensued with
lots of shots being consumed and dancing til the small hours.
My second reunion came the following morning when Shanna and I peeled ourselves out of bed and headed over to Manly to meet up with Dan (and credit where it's due, he coped exceedingly well with us in our fragile states!!) Dark sunnies and lots of water were an essential but after lying on the beach catching up and a refreshing swim in the sea we were feeling human again.
Ok, realising that may bore you all and know i sometimes write essays so will just write a list of other memorable bits:
-Visited Chinese Gardens of Friendship in Darling Harbour. Very beautiful and a very peaceful place to sit, watch the world go by and ponder.
-Watched them switch the xmas lights on in Martin's Place. Really wasn't feeling that christmassy as it was about 25 degrees and sunny but once it got dark and the carols began, the lights came on and the fireworks started it took on that magical feel (but only temporarily, it was lost again by the morning and never fully came back).
- Got to see a baby kangaroo (that's a
joey for all you pendants out there!) as one of the nurses was raising it and brought it in to work for the day. Also got my first close up look at fruit bats and they are actually really cute.
- Several more fun nights out were had with Shanna and Dan and my housemates.
- Me and Shanna made a 'pilgrimage' to Palm Beach otherwise known to anyone who has seen 'Home and Away' as "Summer Bay'. Its actually a fair distance north from sydney(40km) so required a 1 an 1/2 hr bus journey each way but the beach and surrounding were beautiful and it was cool to get our pics taken next to the surf club!
- Shanna, Dan and I went to a Carol Concert in the local park - bit strange to be singing hymns whilst sat there in tshirts and thongs(obviously that wasnt all we were wearing!) but there was an awesome fireworks display at the end.
To be continued...
