Risoyhamn
Told you it was picturesque Woke up this morning to a total white out you could not see outside the window due to heavy snow. The good thing is the windows are clear of salt so either the snow cleared it off or they found a little boy wandering around and hung him off the top with a sponge ha ha.
I forgot to mention I went to a lecture yesterday about the south pole it was really interesting and now I understand how the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen reached the south pole ahead of Scott and his party. It must have been devastating for Scott and his party to find that they were second in the race to reach the south pole. I also understand now why the whole of Amundsen’s party returned and how Scotts party all died on their way back.
We visit Risoyhamn on the island of Andoya and it has only 200 inhabitants so you can imagine how small it was. The channel we had to sail through started off 3 metres deep and due to dredging the sand it now has a channel that is 7 metres deep now as our ship is 5
metres deep below the waterline this is not an easy sail for the captain. You could literally see the markers he had to sail through.
We arrive at Stokmarknes which is a little town on the north side of Hadseloya and take a short stroll into the town past the Hurtigruten museam the town is really picturesque but so it appears is the whole of Norway it appears. We do find an Vinmonopolet (offlicenes to you and me) so stock up on G&T for the next few days.
Once back on the ship we start sailing in the Fjords again I am so looking forward to going into Trollfjord where you can feel like you can touch the mountains as the fjord is so narrow and the captain once inside the fjord has to rotate the ship on the spot 180 degrees - then low and behold the tannoy goes bing bong and on comes an announcement due to the water current conditions we cannot go into the fjord - major blow but hey ho.
I know I keep prattling on about the scenery but it is amazing. stunning and photos
just do not do it justice.
So we are now down to 4 musketeers as Eric went on a brewery tour and Andrew stayed on the ship. Big mistake lads as we had a really great time at the Magic Ice bar which was great jaunt we even had a go on the ice slide which was great fun. It did take Mike a few goes before he could get his bum on the mat but hey ho he did it. The ice bar was not as good as the one we went to in the Ice Hotel but it was still great fun.
Once back on the ship we retired to Rachel’s Bar for a couple of night caps before Mike and I went back on deck to see if we could see any Northern Lights, unfortunately we did not but I did get some great photos - loving my new iPhone 14 Pro.
Tomorrow us girls decided we would get up early and get in the hot tub for when we crossed the Arctic Circle going south - let’s hope the alarm works okay. Managed to do more than
my goal of 10,000 steps for my Samaritans goal of 310,000 in March so really happy as I am sure that one day I might not be able to complete them so I have some extra in the bank for these days.
