Alesund
So picturesque So we set off from Bergen at 8pm and during the night we stopped at Floro and Maloy which if I had not been told I would never have guessed as it was so smooth. I did not have a bad night’s sleep in Cell Block H on the day bed as our room only has one single bed and as Mike is getting on haha I thought the better of things and let him sleep in the bed (one in the bank for me then). Anyway, I was told that I should get up early as we will be stopping at a little place called Torvik and it is beautiful - dutifully I did this and if I am honest and truthful I could have had a bit more sleep as it might be beautiful but the dock was just another dock.
Our first real stop for quite a while was Alesund and we had most of the day to explore this small town. One of the highlights was supposed to be walking up to a view point on Mount Aksla, however as it was a dull and misty day I did not think climbing over 600 staires was the best thing to get no view.
We walked around the town and it had some lovely little shops and the houses were, as you would expect coloured and typical Norwegian.
One of our missions was to find a shop that sold alcohol as it appears in Norway you can only buy alcohol in a government run shops which are called Vinmonopolet. They are also scarce but hey ho when you have the famous 5 (Andrew stayed on the ship) on a scout for a booze shop you can imagine the outcome. As you are not supposed to take booze on the ship I said instead of getting bottles which might clink when we get on board lets buy boxes of wine - this going into Garth prison is teaching me to think differently, well that is my excuse.
On the way back Eric says I fancy a beer does anyone else fancy one - well you can imagine what us 4 said and it was not it’s not 5 o’clock yet, it was right let’s get a beer asap. You would think that this would not be a mission we would fail to complete would you, the famous 5 not being able to buy a pint of beer and a G&T - well I can honestly say we did not achieve this mission - yes you read that right we did not achieve a mission to down a G&T or a pint of beer - that was very painful to type.
Once we got back on board the ship you can guess where we headed immediately, we did not pass go and pick up our £200, no way it was straight to the bar. Now have you ever heard a bar of a ship being closed well it was on our floor - so Eric by this time decided that cannot be true so went in search of another bar which fortunately he found by smelling the hops. We all decided that we would go to the other floor for the bar and then low and behold our bar opened - so alcohol was consumed immediately.
So we went to one of the presidential suites Eric and Sue’s for champers as thought inviting everyone to Cell Block H would not be the best idea. So after a glass or two we went for dinner and then off to bed - no northern lights for us today. So another night on the day bed for me then!
