Albany Covered Bridge
This covered bridge was the entrance to my campground. I felt like they rolled out the red carpet for me with this. Absolutely stunning views. Maine was really getting cold and wet, I needed a change of scenery. I decided to go back to New Hampshire to visit the White Mountain National Forest. Such a good decision. This was a location on my itinerary two weeks ago, but bee lined myself swiftly to Maine despite my premade plans. I have no excuse other than the thrill I get from making last minute decisions. NH was quiet beautiful in this area. The rolling hills of trees that are transforming into their iconic autumn colors covered the grounds as far as the eye could see. Out of the dozens of scenic view points and hiking trails, I first choose the amazing Lower Falls in Albany, by the Kancamapus Highway. Rushing waters of the Swift River, turned slight brown from picking up summer debris in the raising water flow over massive smooth granite rocks creating artwork. The beauty of the scene is extremely photogenic while also very scary. The rocks are slippery, wet, and untrustworthy this time of year! Undoubtably one the most popular visited places along the Kancamapus Hwy.
The Rocky Gorge scenic area is a short drive up the road from the Lower Falls. There is
Rocky Gorge Scenic Area
I bought this sweater in Bar Harbor because the cold was getting to me. You'll see it in a lot of pictures! a foot bridge over the gorge which provides an excellent photo opportunity looking upstream to where the Swift River narrows as it cascades into the gorge. The foot path on the other side of the bridge gradually ascends a small rise to Falls Pond. There is a mile long trail around the pond which is a popular fishing area. A perfect relaxing stop before I head to my camp at Covered Bridge Campground. As the name revealed, there is a covered bridge. I had to stop, take pictures, walk across, down and around the bridge area. There are 5 covered bridges in the White Mountain National Forest. According to my plans, I should see three of the five. This is one.
After a very cozy nights sleep, I woke up early to start my 1 hour drive to The Flumes Gorge. The Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart. The Flume Trail is a 2-mile loop (approx. 1.5 hours) that follows the water then ventures off into the woods. The walk
includes uphill walking and lots of stairs. Many parts of the trail consisted of suspended wooden planks with rushing water below my feet. Towering slick wet rock on either side. Then finally, repetitively a zig zag pattern of steep wooden steps attempting to lead me out of the gorge. The boardwalk allows a person to look closely at the growth of flowers, ferns and mosses found here. All the flora and tree varieties are marked and very helpful.
With everything marked off on my checklist so quickly, I made the decision to head to Massachusetts. Rain was expected the following day so I would like to get settled in somewhere a little more comfortable as the poor weather passes on. This will pass on, right? With every destination, I take time to stop and smell the roses, or taste the donuts. :-) Before arriving at White Mt. I stopped in at The Holy Donut in Portland, ME. This was certainly on my list of must do's! Maine potato donuts made fresh every day. There were so many to choose from but I ended up selecting; The Triple C (chocolate, coconut & caramel) & The Holy Cannoli Ginger donuts. Each

Here you can really get a view of the debris that the raising water has captured. Locals say that the water is crystal clear in the summer but not a show stopping scene like this. were delightfully delicious. Not overly sweet even though the names say otherwise. A beautiful fluffy texture...holy donut that was good!
Live the moments you can’t put into words.
