Our next stop for the day was Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn. We took a water ferry across the river to the temple. It is a very simple temple that consists of one main pagoda, four satellite pagodas and four porch structures. The structures are covered with porcelain and china pieces to make up its ornate look. The main Pagoda is 66.8 meters high with a base of 236 square meters.
After crossing back across the river and managing to not get sick at the smell of the rotting fish for sale at the entrance to the ferry we hailed a taxi to the Golden Buddha Temple (Wat Traimit). The taxi driver kept trying to tell us the temple was closed but only being 3:30 pm, we told him to keep going. I am not sure but I bet he wanted us to go “shopping” with him. The Temple was open. The Golden Buddha is the largest pure gold Buddha in the world. At one time it was covered in plaster with a gold layer to conceal the fact that is was pure gold from enemy invaders.
My brother Jess had given me a tip that O’Reilly Irish Pub in the Patpong area of town has awesome Shepard’s Pie. He did not tell me where it was but we decided to set out walking to Patpong. As always I take Scott for walks in the “nice” areas of town. We walked for about two hours and just as Scott remarked that if we walked for another six hours we might find it and we had decided to stop at the next acceptable establishment for a drink, it appeared before us. Jess was right the Shepard’s Pie was yummy. It is a great bar if you are looking for European/American style food to give you a break from rice and noodles. The wait staff was great, maybe the best we have had since we started the journey. After eating we tried to get a cab, but none wanted to use the meter as they wanted to charge a flat fee, which too high in my opinion, so we opted to take the Sky train and then walked a few blocks to the hotel.
