This will be the highlight of the trip!!
Hello Everyone:

After over 2 years of being grounded, there is only one thing better than writing this blog… that’s actually being able to travel. We are so looking forward to our trip to Portugal and North/Western Spain from May 18th to June 18th. We start in Lisbon and area, then head to Northern Spain, back to Porto/Douro Valley and finish in the Algarve.

This will be our first visit to Portugal and it promises to be an interesting and educational adventure. With a population of around 11 million, the country has a deep history and from what we can determine, there have been numerous influences that will give us a unique cultural experience. In particular, the food with it’s array of seafood, sausage, stews etc should be absolutely delightful. Of course there is also Port wine for which Portugal is famous and most of all, the Custard tarts which will require us to significantly reduce our calorie intake before and after the trip in order to fully enjoy them while there.

We experienced a couple of stresses before leaving. Portugal requires Canadian citizens to be fully vaccinated and to show proof of a negative Covid anti-gen test or PCR test in advance 24 hours or 72 hours respectively. (Our test at Wal-mart the morning of our flight was negative, thank goodness). For other countries such as Benin, El Salvador, Togo, only proof of vaccination is required to enter Portugal. Canada, USA and Australia are not exempt for testing requirements!! Go figure?? The second stressor was clearing security at Pearson Airport. The recent media coverage of long delay’s left us guessing how early we should arrive. We were at the airport 4 hours before our flight and it took us appx 1 1/2 hours to clear so the extra time hanging around Pearson really adds to the total travel time.

So we’re good to go on our first leg of the journey and our next blog will cover Lisbon and surrounding area.
