A Great Start & End of Bob's Birthday
breakfast out & dinner reconnecting with friends Well, the next occasion to celebrate was Bob’s birthday on Oct 25
th. As we just got back from our wonderful trip to Cappadocia, I was feeling bad that it wouldn’t be too exciting. Thankfully, as Bob keeps telling me – when we do these trips around our birthdays, they are for both of us! The one thing we did know that would make the day special was getting to reconnect with Darren and Sue. Darren, we got to know years ago (approx. 40 years ago!) when we all lived in Botswana. We were so excited to hear from him before we finalized our trip to Cappadocia so we could coordinate our dates to be sure to be here in Marmaris when he and Sue would be able to visit. Unknown to me, Darren has been following our blog for a number of years and thankfully this time I had worked hard to keep the blog up to date preparing for what I knew would be a hard one to do on Cappadocia. It really paid off as found that Darren and Sue have been touring around in their van for a few months and luckily, they were going to be close
Every Day They Keep Pulling More Boats Out
wonder how many there will be by the time we leave to Marmaris on Bob’s birthday. It was truly wonderful to reconnect after all these years and find out what he has been doing since we last saw him as well as meet Sue. Got a chance to visit some (never enough time) and have dinner together at the marina restaurant. To think he was still a “kid” then and now he is retired and enjoying the ability to travel around which allowed him to reconnect with us. Hopefully it wouldn’t be as long before we can connect again! It really is wonderful when you meet up with people that you knew in the past and it is so easy to reconnect! Fortunately, that has happened to us a number of times – definitely friendships that last!
There has definitely been a change in the weather recently with quite a few days of rain, but luckily there haven’t been strong winds associated with it. We have been treated to a few “light” shows with the lightening, but with the number of masts around here that are taller than us, we weren’t worried!
Unfortunately, this past week I (Janice) came down with a beaut of a head cold. As a
result, Bob took over of being “nurse” to me by doing the cooking and just letting me rest as much as I can. Thursday is the big market day here in Marmaris, so I told Bob to go on by himself as I still wasn’t at all up to par. He asked for my list of things to get (and did say that there is a good possibility that he would bring back more than we need). Yes, for some reason when we are at the market, Bob seems to forgot the size of our refrigeration, storage and how many meals we will be making before the next market day. With that in mind, he went off so will see when he gets back how he does! I wanted to go back to sleep right away so neither of us had breakfast before he left. Bob definitely enjoys eating breakfast out so I wasn’t worried at all about him not having something. Later when I woke up, I didn’t feel like much but got myself something to eat. I had made contact with Bob to see if he found a good place for breakfast in town and he said he
found a “new favorite place” and it is close to the bus stop! I got quite a bit of sleep and didn’t even hear Bob come back onboard but saw that he got everything on the list and then some! I was amazed at what he carried home as he really out did himself with a whole watermelon (he did ask for the smallest one!), all the fruits and vegetables for the week, picked up a few things needed at the grocery store and on top of that brought back a nice pot full of daisies! He really outdid himself on this trip. I told him that he still had the job of finding room for it all in the refrigerator. He wasn’t sure if that was really fair as he had carried it all back, but knowing that I was sick, he was a good sport. He managed with everything except the watermelon. We will be sure to cut it up and share with others at the marina.
Unfortunately, as I was starting to feel better, Bob came down sick. I’m still not over this after a week, but luckily, I’m now doing better than Bob so I
can take over the cooking detail! After a couple of days, Bob did say that I definitely did more “cooking” than he did, but I had no problem with that as wasn’t up to eating that much anyway. Even had time to make a pot of chili which tasted good for a change as the weather is starting to get cool enough for that. Thankfully we didn’t both come down with this at the same time, but now that it is a week into mine, I sure wish I was back to 100% as it is hard to have all this time to do things with neither of us feeling up to par to do much. Guess if we were going to be sick this was the week to do it, as we have been having rain for quite a few days here. One night we had a thunderstorm all night long, but the rest of the days we have a mixture of sun and rain. It is definitely cooler in the mornings and evenings but we still keep wearing our shorts (but with a fleece) – only broke down and wore long pants once so far and it is
now November!
Just feeling a little cabin fever now so hopefully we will be up to doing some walking as heard there are some nice trails near here. For now, we only take a little time to walk around the boat yard and wander around some of the mega yachts that have been pulled out this week. This boat yard is definitely a working yard as it is pulling boats out constantly. Even saw them still pulling boats and power washing the hulls at 7:45PM so they really do keep at it!
I had mentioned in an earlier post that everyone is welcome to eat in the commissary (employee’s dining area) so one night we both were up to wandering over and having dinner there. The marina posts the weekly menu each week so you know what they are offering each day. We still are amazed at the flavor of the food, the quantity (finally have gotten them to serve less) and all for $2.
One thing that has been keeping me busy this week has been working with our bank back home to get an international wire transfer done. It has been quite a job as
Not Every Day Is Sunshine - A Few Rainy Days
listening to the rain on the overhead hatches started on this a few weeks ago. Problems have come up as a result of weak wi-fi connection at times, problems with the on-line banking system not working, and having their fraud department question the transaction. We definitely understand and are appreciative that they are careful, BUT after having talked to the department the first time and being told that I could just put the request in again and it should be fine, IT REALLY WASN’T. With the time difference between the US and Turkey that also has created some problems as I do not get the message that there is a problem until the next morning, my Wi-Fi connection for skype isn’t great until the evening hours, and at times find out that their office is then closed. It would be frustrating enough normally, but being sick hasn’t helped. I am just celebrating this morning as my 3
rd discussion with the fraud department, they agreed AGAIN that they would process it (this time they said that they couldn’t do the last as it was “timed out”) and this morning I found it really did happen!! These are a few of the challenges of living away from excellent wi-fi, but
in the end, it is still definitely worth it!
I also had time this week when sitting up to make arrangements for our flights back to the US so we now have a definite deadline for getting projects done on the boat. Sometimes that is just needed to get you motivated a little more.
Know not much exciting news here, but at least with “time on my hands” sitting around I can get the blog up to day. Always have to think positive…
